Move a 100 year old church
HOW TO MOVE A 100 YEAR OLD CHURCH.. This is a song about a church being moved hundreds of miles across the US on the back of a very big lorry. Features the 40 strong Manning Chorus in what is possibly one of the most bizzare bits of TV I've ever been involved in - a musical number at the end of a show about, basically, feats of engineering skill. Some of the footage is almost Fellini-esque… It's taken from the upcoming series MONSTER MOVES which airs on Five (UK) and National Geographic (USA) from early 2007…

Architecture these days has never been more advanced: Buildings are making their own energy and using ice as air conditioning. Creative buildings don't always involve special technology, however. We've found nine buildings that are sure to disorient their residents, either by making them feel like mice in giant land, or by making them extremely dizzy. Check them out after the jump…

Mapping the brain
Mapping the Most Complex Structure in the Universe: Your Brain. Harvard scientists have embarked upon an ambitious program to create a circuit diagram of the human brain, with the help of new machines that automatically turn brain tissue into high-resolution neural maps. By mapping every synapse in the brain, researchers hope to create a "connectome" -- a diagram that would elucidate the brain's activity at a level of detail far outstripping today's most advanced brain-monitoring tools like fMRI. "You're going to see things you didn't expect," said Jeff Lichtman, a Harvard professor of molecular and cellular biology. "It gives us an opportunity to witness this vast complicated universe that has been largely inaccessible until now." The effort is part of a new field of scientific research called connectomics. The field is so new that the first course ever taught on it recently ended at MIT. It is to neuroscience what genomics is to genetics. Where genetics looks at individual genes or groups of genes, genomics looks at the entire genetic complement of an organism…

Scotland's honour for soldier Bear
Honour sought for 'Soldier Bear' A campaign has been launched to build a permanent memorial to a bear which spent much of its life in Scotland - after fighting in World War II.
The bear - named Voytek - was adopted in the Middle East by Polish troops in 1943, becoming much more than a mascot. The large animal even helped their armed forces to carry ammunition at the Battle of Monte Cassino. Voytek - known as the Soldier Bear - later lived near Hutton in the Borders and ended his days at Edinburgh Zoo. He was found wandering in the hills of Iran by Polish soldiers in 1943. They adopted him and as he grew he was trained to carry heavy mortar rounds. Watch Soldier bear on video too…

Hidden Afghanistan's treasures
Hidden Afghanistan: The Recovered Treasure. The treasure was sealed in seven trunks and hid in a vault carved out of rock. It was protected by a steel gate bolted shut by seven locks, with keys held by seven people. Key holders begun to die, but the precious keys were not lost. The rule was that in case of death, a key turned to the keeper's eldest son. It is not a fable. It is the real story of the archaeological treasures kept in Kabul's National Museum, whose collection consisted of some 100,000 objects by the time the Soviets Union invaded the country in 1979. As well as causing two million deaths, the Russian invasion destroyed the country's economy and the cultural infrastructure. Many treasures were plundered.
But the low point for the museum came in 2001, when the Taliban regime, who opposed to any art displaying human or animal forms, wiped out not only the colossal figures of the Bamiyan Buddhas, but also 2,500 priceless artifacts at the museum. Luckly, the Taliban did not get it all. Already in 1988, when the situation was deteriorating, the heroic museum director Omar Khan Massoudi and his staff secretly moved the best of the collection -- intricate ornaments, figurines showing dragon-like creatures and winged goddesses, pendants and necklaces dotted with precious stones -- to a vault in the Central Bank at the presidential palace. Of course, Massoudi was one of the seven key holders…

Bob’s House
Pepsi has just released an extremely unique new commercial that will air during the Super Bowl. Don’t adjust your headphones, there is no sound during the entire 60-second commercial. The 2008 Super Bowl ad, Bob's House is a unique and hilarious commercial illustrating a popular joke in the hearing impaired community. Created and enacted by deaf members of the Pepsico workforce, EnAble. In addition to utilizing deaf actors, the ad attempts to show what it’s like for a hearing person to operate in a deaf world, much as the deaf need to operate in a hearing world. The title of the commercial, “Bob’s House” is based off a joke in deaf culture. Pepsi has also released a 2-minute video, “Bob’s House - - Behind the Scenes of a Super Bowl Ad” that shows how the ad was thought up, created and produced. I’m impressed by Pepsi’s innovative thought process and risk-taking. Additionally, how often are ads really written for, or targeting deaf consumers? I would guess rarely, if at all. Pepsi definitely deserves praise for making an appeal to consumers in the deaf community and producing for them the type of ad they are not used to seeing…

Hookers for Jesus
Hookers for Jesus: Ex sex-workers save souls. Las Vegas used to be a lucrative haunt for Annie Lobert, a $500-a-day escort girl, and Heather Veitch, a highly-remunerated stripper. Now the vivacious double act patrol the city’s neon-lit streets with a dramatically different mission - to save souls rather than sell their bodies. With their peroxide blond hair, contour-hugging outfits, and surgically-enhanced chests, they do not look so different from their former incarnations in the city’s notorious sex industry. But the strategically-located message adorning their tight black T-shirts gives away their new mission - as born-again Christians. Embossed in gaudy pink, the word "Hookers" appears above the Christian symbol of the fish across Ms Lobert’s chest, while Ms Veitch’s shirt bears the legend "Holy Hotties". I guess a lot of guys would be saved from hell, by such missionaries… ;)

Fait based diet
Faith-Based Diet Puts God Before Food. Weigh Down Workshop Touted, Criticized Wouldn't it be nice to lose lots of weight without even trying? Some middle Tennesseans say they've done it with the help of what's called the Weigh Down Workshop, WSMV-TV in Nashville reported While it works in some cases, the method of the workshop has made some question whether it is healthy. Gwen Shamblin, a former dietician turned weight-loss guru, founded the Weigh Down Workshop on a simple premise in 1986: Let God tell you when you're hungry and when to stop eating. "You've tried many things, but the answer is in turning to God," Shamblin says on an introductory DVD. On the DVD, Shamblin tells followers to turn their love of food into a love of God and the weight will fall off. "Changing the food's content, dieting and changing your energy output, exercising has not worked," she said. In recent months, the Weigh Down Workshop, based in Franklin, has been featured on everything from "The Tyra Banks Show" to Ladies Home Journal…

Circumcision case
Ask boy, 12, if he wants to be circumcised, court says. A 12-year-old boy should get a say in whether he gets circumcised, the Oregon Supreme Court has ruled. The court sent the parental custody dispute back to the trial court "to resolve the factual issue whether M agrees or objects to the circumcision." "M" is the child at the center of a long-running custody dispute between James and Lia Boldt, who divorced in 1999. Soon after, the father began studying Judaism and later converted. He also started teaching his son about the faith. By then, James had parental custody and told his ex-wife the boy would convert as well, and that to do so, he would have to have the circumcision procedure. The mother objected, saying the child had been raised in the Russian Orthodox faith while the couple was married. Because the two sides disagreed, and were living in neighboring states, the conflict dissolved into ongoing personal and constitutional dispute. James Boldt said that as a Jew and the primary caregiver, he has a First Amendment right to practice his faith as he sees fit for his child…

Boy saves dad's life
Boy saves dad's life. A BOY has been hailed a hero after he gave his father mouth-to-mouth and ran 3km for help when their car rolled over. Lachlan "Lochie" Nally, 11, saw that dad Matthew's chest wasn't moving after their car rolled in the South Australian north yesterday.
The brave boy, who suffered minor injuries, performed CPR on his father then ran barefoot 3km to the Koolunga hotel. He bashed on the door and woke the owner, who called an ambulance. "I went back to the pub because they were the only people I knew in Koolunga . . . I was scared and it was pitch black and I couldn't see anything," Lochie said yesterday.
Mum Kim March described her son as fearless and as someone who would help anyone.
"He jumped out the car window and he ran for help and that just blew me away," she said. "For 3km, and it's pitch dark by yourself -- for a little boy it's amazing. "I told him he's saved his dad's life . . . I am just ecstatic he did a fantastic job.". "I'm very proud of him."

Masters release
Masters Ordered Free, Conviction Overturned… A smiling Timothy Masters walked out of court a free man for the first time in nearly a decade on Tuesday, his 1999 murder conviction wiped out by DNA evidence that points to another suspect. His defense team started the DNA testing thanks to a husband and wife team in The Netherlands that helped compare evidence left on Hettrick's clothing to Masters' DNA profile. They didn't match. The DNA experts flew from Europe to be at Tuesday's hearing and talked to CBS4 Monday afternoon. "For us it's emotional too," said Selma Eikelenboom-Schieveld, a forensic investigator "We never thought it would be that emotional, but it is."

Iran warns Netherlands...
Iran Warns Netherlands Not to Air Controversial 'Anti-Muslim' Film A senior Iranian lawmaker warned the Netherlands on Monday not to allow the screening of what it called an anti-Islamic film produced by a Dutch politician, claiming it "reflects insulting views about the Holy Koran." Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, promised widespread protests and a review of Iran's relationship with the Netherlands if Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders' work is shown. "If Holland will allow the broadcast of this movie, the Iranian parliament will request to reconsider our relationship with it," Boroujerdi said, according to IRNA, the official Iranian news agency. "In Iran, insulting Islam is a very sensitive matter and if the movie is broadcasted it will arouse a wave of popular hate that will be directed towards any government that insults Islam.
Wilders calls his 10-minute film "a call to shake off the creeping tyranny of Islamicization, " and said it could air as early as this week on Dutch television. "People who watch the movie will see that the Koran is very much alive today, leading to the destruction of everything we in the Western world stand for, which is respect and tolerance," Wilders, the 41-year-old leader of the right-wing Party for Freedom, said last month in a telephone interview with FOXNews.com. "The tsunami of Islamicization is coming to Europe. We should come to be far stronger." Like other European countries, the Netherlands is struggling to cope with an influx of Muslim immigrants, and the newcomers are often relegated to working at low-paying jobs and living in high-crime ghettos. Though the Dutch boast of their culture of tolerance, tensions have been high, with some blaming rising unemployment and crime on newcomers from Muslim countries like Turkey, Morocco and Somalia…

Speaking of dumb Mars claims
A man is in the photograph which the Mars explorer Spirit (it stopped transmitting data in 2004) sent. First, puhlllleeeeze. A man? It’s a tiny rock only a few inches high. It’s only a few feet from the rover! Here’s the image from NASA. As usual for antiscience nonsense, they point to a press release image with no indication of when it was taken, or what the original image is. There are thousands of Spirit images, and I have little desire to comb through them looking for this one (though it appears to be early in the mission; it’s still on the landing accouterments). Second, Spirit stopped transmitting data in 2004? Well, kinda. It did stop, but then it started again. We’re still getting good stuff from both the Spirit and Opportunity rovers on Mars.

Crook called a cab
Cheeky crook 'called cab to make getaway' A British burglary victim voiced disbelief Monday at a thief's "unbelievable" cheek in calling a taxi from her ransacked home to make his getaway. Cardiff Crown Court jailed Gareth Waith, 22, for three years after he admitted stealing $6800 dollars worth of goods from neighbour Katie Battiscombe's house in the Welsh capital when everyone was out. Having stuffed mobile phones, a DVD player, a laptop computer, a television and computer games into a holdall and some refuse bags in the Halloween raid last October, the burglar then used the house phone to call a cab.
"I couldn't stop laughing when I found out," Battiscombe, 24, told the South Wales Echo regional newspaper. "The nerve of some people is just unbelievable. "The thought of him calling a taxi from my house phone and then just sitting on my wall with all my stuff, waiting for it to arrive, is just ridiculous."

£1m 'poison' gift by widow splits village. Locals in the Loire valley say too high a price will be paid to benefit from a 'miraculous' bequest…Not only will the village get the £1m only if the Avenue de la République is renamed after her, her favourite paintings are hung in the mayor's office and her house is sold not to local people but, quelle horreur, 'only to people from Paris', but Louart has added a further condition: that the money is spent on building council houses to be let at peppercorn rates to poor or destitute families. It is a prospect that is far from filling every inhabitant with joy. 'It's a dilemma. Accepting the money will change the village entirely and I like it as it is,' said one 62-year-old local woman, who refused to give her name because 'in a little community you never know. It's her revenge on us all. You can see from her photo that she had a nasty streak.'…

Demolition of pensioners homes in Spain
Spanish 'persecuting' expatriates over homes. Hundreds of Britons fear that they could lose their homes on the Costas in what they claim is an "out-and-out persecution" of the expatriate community. Residents' groups are planning demonstrations outside their town halls over the coming weeks to demand that the homes they bought in good faith are declared safe against an offensive by Spanish authorities to demolish property built illegally. "I doubt very much that we will be here next year," said Mr Bull, 66, as he surveyed the property that has cost them £200,000 just outside the town of Vera. Last week they watched as a demolition crew tore down the home of their neighbours, Len and Helen Prior, after the regional government of Andalusia revoked the building licence issued by the town hall…that’s a very bad experience in Spain…pensioners losing a lot of money on real estate value…

Old lady banned from church
Banned From Church… Reviving an ancient practice, churches are exposing sinners and shunning those who won't repent. On a quiet Sunday morning in June, as worshippers settled into the pews at Allen Baptist Church in southwestern Michigan, Pastor Jason Burrick grabbed his cellphone and dialed 911. When a dispatcher answered, the preacher said a former congregant was in the sanctuary. "And we need to, um, have her out A.S.A.P." Half an hour later, 71-year-old Karolyn Caskey, a church member for nearly 50 years who had taught Sunday school and regularly donated 10% of her pension, was led out by a state trooper and a county sheriff's officer. One held her purse and Bible. The other put her in handcuffs. (Listen to the 911 call) The charge was trespassing, but Mrs. Caskey's real offense, in her pastor's view, was spiritual. Several months earlier, when she had questioned his authority, he'd charged her with spreading "a spirit of cancer and discord" and expelled her from the congregation. "I've been shunned," she says. I call that a stupid, nasty priest, not worth to be the representing man of fait and god here!!! Am I banned too now? That what we expected, its fine to me… ;)

Ailing woman battered during home invasion
Ailing woman battered during home invasion. Jennifer Towe has decided to start locking her front door after a woman entered her home early Thursday and assaulted her mother-in-law. Towe was woken just before 5 a.m. by sounds of a struggle in the living room of her home in the 2300 block of Fowler Lane off Highway 62 near White City. "It's pretty strange first thing in the morning to find a woman on top of your mother-in-law," Towe said.
Jennifer Marie Wojack, 27, was wearing only underwear and a small shirt when she entered the home and attacked 57-year-old Joy Mitchell, who was asleep on the couch. Mitchell — who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and breaths with the aid of an oxygen tank — suffered bruised ribs and scratches on her throat before Towe's husband managed to pull Wojack off her. The scene was made more chaotic by Wojack's bizarre behavior during the attack. "She was screaming, 'We're going to Egypt, we're going to Egypt' while she was trying to strangle my mother-in-law to death," Towe said.
Mitchell's husband Roy Towe, 35, fought with Wojack until Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrived. Roy Towe, who stands more than 6 feet tall and weighs 250 pounds, had his hands full with the 5-foot, 130-pound Wojack. He sustained a broken nose and dislocated wrist during the scuffle. He was forced to hit Wojack at one point, which prompted her to scream, "Give me more daddy. I like it, I like it," Towe said…psychotic woman needs psychiatric help immediately…

Utah mother admits sex with teen boys
Utah Mother Admits To Sex Acts With Teen Boys. A 37-year-old Utah mother -- and former substitute teacher -- has admitted to engaging in illegal sexual acts with at least five teenage boys. Leisa Ward, a mother of four, pleaded guilty on child sex-related charges in a deal that led prosecutors to drop the most serious counts against her. Ward agreed to plead guilty on charges of unlawful sexual conduct and, as a result will not be charged with anything else. Ward was arrested in Nov. 2007 following reports that she engaged in sexual activities with at least five boys, whose ages were 16 or 17 at the time. Nephi Police said the allegations started as rumors that were eventually corroborated…
