Mapping the brain
Mapping the Most Complex Structure in the Universe: Your Brain. Harvard scientists have embarked upon an ambitious program to create a circuit diagram of the human brain, with the help of new machines that automatically turn brain tissue into high-resolution neural maps. By mapping every synapse in the brain, researchers hope to create a "connectome" -- a diagram that would elucidate the brain's activity at a level of detail far outstripping today's most advanced brain-monitoring tools like fMRI. "You're going to see things you didn't expect," said Jeff Lichtman, a Harvard professor of molecular and cellular biology. "It gives us an opportunity to witness this vast complicated universe that has been largely inaccessible until now." The effort is part of a new field of scientific research called connectomics. The field is so new that the first course ever taught on it recently ended at MIT. It is to neuroscience what genomics is to genetics. Where genetics looks at individual genes or groups of genes, genomics looks at the entire genetic complement of an organism…

Scotland's honour for soldier Bear
Honour sought for 'Soldier Bear' A campaign has been launched to build a permanent memorial to a bear which spent much of its life in Scotland - after fighting in World War II.
The bear - named Voytek - was adopted in the Middle East by Polish troops in 1943, becoming much more than a mascot. The large animal even helped their armed forces to carry ammunition at the Battle of Monte Cassino. Voytek - known as the Soldier Bear - later lived near Hutton in the Borders and ended his days at Edinburgh Zoo. He was found wandering in the hills of Iran by Polish soldiers in 1943. They adopted him and as he grew he was trained to carry heavy mortar rounds. Watch Soldier bear on video too…

Hidden Afghanistan's treasures
Hidden Afghanistan: The Recovered Treasure. The treasure was sealed in seven trunks and hid in a vault carved out of rock. It was protected by a steel gate bolted shut by seven locks, with keys held by seven people. Key holders begun to die, but the precious keys were not lost. The rule was that in case of death, a key turned to the keeper's eldest son. It is not a fable. It is the real story of the archaeological treasures kept in Kabul's National Museum, whose collection consisted of some 100,000 objects by the time the Soviets Union invaded the country in 1979. As well as causing two million deaths, the Russian invasion destroyed the country's economy and the cultural infrastructure. Many treasures were plundered.
But the low point for the museum came in 2001, when the Taliban regime, who opposed to any art displaying human or animal forms, wiped out not only the colossal figures of the Bamiyan Buddhas, but also 2,500 priceless artifacts at the museum. Luckly, the Taliban did not get it all. Already in 1988, when the situation was deteriorating, the heroic museum director Omar Khan Massoudi and his staff secretly moved the best of the collection -- intricate ornaments, figurines showing dragon-like creatures and winged goddesses, pendants and necklaces dotted with precious stones -- to a vault in the Central Bank at the presidential palace. Of course, Massoudi was one of the seven key holders…

Bob’s House
Pepsi has just released an extremely unique new commercial that will air during the Super Bowl. Don’t adjust your headphones, there is no sound during the entire 60-second commercial. The 2008 Super Bowl ad, Bob's House is a unique and hilarious commercial illustrating a popular joke in the hearing impaired community. Created and enacted by deaf members of the Pepsico workforce, EnAble. In addition to utilizing deaf actors, the ad attempts to show what it’s like for a hearing person to operate in a deaf world, much as the deaf need to operate in a hearing world. The title of the commercial, “Bob’s House” is based off a joke in deaf culture. Pepsi has also released a 2-minute video, “Bob’s House - - Behind the Scenes of a Super Bowl Ad” that shows how the ad was thought up, created and produced. I’m impressed by Pepsi’s innovative thought process and risk-taking. Additionally, how often are ads really written for, or targeting deaf consumers? I would guess rarely, if at all. Pepsi definitely deserves praise for making an appeal to consumers in the deaf community and producing for them the type of ad they are not used to seeing…

Hookers for Jesus
Hookers for Jesus: Ex sex-workers save souls. Las Vegas used to be a lucrative haunt for Annie Lobert, a $500-a-day escort girl, and Heather Veitch, a highly-remunerated stripper. Now the vivacious double act patrol the city’s neon-lit streets with a dramatically different mission - to save souls rather than sell their bodies. With their peroxide blond hair, contour-hugging outfits, and surgically-enhanced chests, they do not look so different from their former incarnations in the city’s notorious sex industry. But the strategically-located message adorning their tight black T-shirts gives away their new mission - as born-again Christians. Embossed in gaudy pink, the word "Hookers" appears above the Christian symbol of the fish across Ms Lobert’s chest, while Ms Veitch’s shirt bears the legend "Holy Hotties". I guess a lot of guys would be saved from hell, by such missionaries… ;)

Fait based diet
Faith-Based Diet Puts God Before Food. Weigh Down Workshop Touted, Criticized Wouldn't it be nice to lose lots of weight without even trying? Some middle Tennesseans say they've done it with the help of what's called the Weigh Down Workshop, WSMV-TV in Nashville reported While it works in some cases, the method of the workshop has made some question whether it is healthy. Gwen Shamblin, a former dietician turned weight-loss guru, founded the Weigh Down Workshop on a simple premise in 1986: Let God tell you when you're hungry and when to stop eating. "You've tried many things, but the answer is in turning to God," Shamblin says on an introductory DVD. On the DVD, Shamblin tells followers to turn their love of food into a love of God and the weight will fall off. "Changing the food's content, dieting and changing your energy output, exercising has not worked," she said. In recent months, the Weigh Down Workshop, based in Franklin, has been featured on everything from "The Tyra Banks Show" to Ladies Home Journal…

Circumcision case
Ask boy, 12, if he wants to be circumcised, court says. A 12-year-old boy should get a say in whether he gets circumcised, the Oregon Supreme Court has ruled. The court sent the parental custody dispute back to the trial court "to resolve the factual issue whether M agrees or objects to the circumcision." "M" is the child at the center of a long-running custody dispute between James and Lia Boldt, who divorced in 1999. Soon after, the father began studying Judaism and later converted. He also started teaching his son about the faith. By then, James had parental custody and told his ex-wife the boy would convert as well, and that to do so, he would have to have the circumcision procedure. The mother objected, saying the child had been raised in the Russian Orthodox faith while the couple was married. Because the two sides disagreed, and were living in neighboring states, the conflict dissolved into ongoing personal and constitutional dispute. James Boldt said that as a Jew and the primary caregiver, he has a First Amendment right to practice his faith as he sees fit for his child…

A woman monitored with a tracking device
A judge has set bond for a woman accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy, but she'll be monitored when she's released. A judge set bond at $25,000 for 31-year-old Connie Gainey. As a term of her bond, she must have no contact with the victim in the case, and she will have to wear a tracking device. Gainey was arrested Tuesday and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The week before, deputies charged her with criminal sexually conduct with a minor in the second degree. Deputies say the sexual relationship started last year when the boy was 15. He's since turned 16…
