Cuban athletes leave Pan American games early
Cuban athletes leave games early. Cuban athletes have made a hurried departure from the Pan-American games in Brazil, apparently amid fears of possible mass defections. It is not clear why there has been such a rapid departure in advance of the final ceremony, but four Cuban athletes have already defected during the competition. Such was the speed of the departure that some athletes were said to have had difficulty finding their luggage.
Cuba's President, Fidel Castro, has already made clear his irritation over earlier defections, accusing athletes of betraying their country for money. "Betrayal for money is one of the favourite weapons of the United States to destroy Cuba's resistance," he said. At the 1999 Pan-American Games in Canada up to 13 athletes defected, and it seems Cuba was keen to avoid something on the same scale happening in Rio…

Insane priest vs. skaters
A bunch of kids were skateboarding on a church lawn when a man said to be a priest suddenly came and lashed out at them cursing and getting a bit physical on them, it took them several minutes to be exchanging harsh words at each other so the skateboard buddies decided to leave the property and disengage in more heated argument that may lead to something ugly. He wrote: 'While staying in Varazze, moored next to the Baglietto ship yard, a newly launched super yacht left the docks. I was watching with my daughter, when it promptly rammed the bridge that had opened to let it out and then ran up the dockside wall at speed. 'It had only left the dock 30 seconds earlier - one of the crew jumped off the foredeck into the harbour as it hit the harbour wall. It appears that no one was physically hurt (amazing with all sorts of people around on a sunny Saturday) only the skipper's pride and I imagine his paycheck!' Read this article with nice pictures…

Paris Hilton loses inheritance of 60 million dollar
Paris Hilton loses inheritance. PARTY princess Paris Hilton is $60 million out of pocket after her billionaire grandfather - appalled by her jail term for drink-driving offences - axed her inheritance. Family patriarch Barron Hilton was already embarrassed by his granddaughter's wild behaviour - notably when her home sex video was leaked on the internet. But the 79-year-old considered her 23-day sentence last month the last straw."He was, and is, extremely embarrassed by how the Hilton name has been sullied by Paris," says Jerry Oppenheimer, who wrote a biography of the clan called House of Hilton. "He now doesn't want to leave unearned wealth to his family."…

Democrats burdening small business with tax hikes...
Coming Hike…Expiring tax relief, big spending on the agenda for Congress…the 2001 and 2003 tax reductions have spurred more than five years of uninterrupted growth. The economy grew at a robust 3.4 percent in the second quarter of 2007. Productivity growth has averaged 2.8 percent since 2001, considerably above the average of each of the past three decades. Since August 2003, our economy has created more than 8.2 million jobs, and the current unemployment rate is just 4.5 percent, lower than the averages of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Wages have been on the rise, and real after-tax income is up 9.9 percent since President Bush took office, an average of nearly $3,000 per person. Small businesses employ half of all private sector employees and have been responsible for 60 to 80 percent of the net new jobs created annually over the last ten years. Burdening successful small businesses with significant tax hikes, as the Democrats’ plan would do, would jeopardize future economic growth and job creation…

Woman of 108 told to wait 18 months for hearing aid...
The woman of 108 told to wait 18 months for hearing aid. A woman aged 108 has been told she must wait 18 months before the Health Service will give her the hearing aid she needs.
Former piano teacher Olive Beal, one of the oldest people in Britain, has poor eyesight and uses a wheelchair. The delay could mean she will be unable to communicate and listen to the music she loves…Not only in Britain but in Europe the health services and insurances for the people with a hearing problem, are all a mess…example: I had to pay a few thousand Euros extra for two hearing aid’s, while a Danish person should have to pay nothing for the same brand and quality of hearing aid’s. As a self employer small business owner, I can’t work without my good functioning hearing-aid. Here in the Netherlands I could get only a cheap but too bad working hearing aid from my insurance. Our government of Health is making the rules…and now I had to pay hundreds of euros per month for my health insurance…The politicians who make those stupid rules should know: a hearing aid is prosthesis! People can’t work, earn their own money and have a social life without…would anyone accept a half leg as prosthesis???

Needles in the Golden Gate park...
THE SITUATION AT GOLDEN GATE PARK. Sunday in the park -- with needles. They tell us he was steaming, but San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom shouldn't have been too surprised when The Chronicle reported that Golden Gate Park was littered with used drug syringes… After all, his own Public Health Department spent $800,000 last year to help hand out some 2 million syringes to drug users under the city's needle exchange program -- sometimes 20 at a time. Mary Howe, director of the Homeless Youth Alliance, which operates a needle exchange program near the park with the help of city money, said her group gets back only about 70 percent of the needles it distributes. "People lose them or the police take them,'' Howe said. The logic behind making needles easy to obtain is that the more people share syringes, the more likely they are to contract HIV and other blood-borne diseases. The problem is getting back the needles from users once they take off to cloud nine…

Oscar the cat predicts when people are about to die...
A Day in the Life of Oscar the Cat. Since he was adopted by staff members as a kitten, Oscar the Cat has had an uncanny ability to predict when residents are about to die. Thus far, he has presided over the deaths of more than 25 residents on the third floor of Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. His mere presence at the bedside is viewed by physicians and nursing home staff as an almost absolute indicator of impending death, allowing staff members to adequately notify families. Oscar has also provided companionship to those who would otherwise have died alone. For his work, he is highly regarded by the physicians and staff at Steere House and by the families of the residents whom he serves…

UK MI6 could have capture Osama Bin Laden, but didn't...
UK wanted US to rule out Bin Laden torture. Ministers insisted that British secret agents would only be allowed to pass intelligence to the CIA to help it capture Osama bin Laden if the agency promised he would not be tortured, it has emerged. MI6 believed it was close to finding the al-Qaida leader in Afghanistan in 1998, and again the next year. The plan was for MI6 to hand the CIA vital information about Bin Laden. Ministers including Robin Cook, the then foreign secretary, gave their approval on condition that the CIA gave assurances he would be treated humanely. The plot is revealed in a 75-page report by parliament's intelligence and security committee on rendition, the practice of flying detainees to places where they may be tortured. "In 1998, SIS [MI6] believed that it might be able to obtain actionable intelligence that might enable the CIA to capture Osama bin Laden," the committee says in its report. It adds: "Given that this might have resulted in him being rendered from Afghanistan to the US, SIS sought ministerial approval. This was given provided that the CIA gave assurances regarding humane treatment." British intelligence made a similar request in 1999, and obtained the same response from Whitehall, but in the event MI6 did not provide the information…

US - UK still special columnist John o'Sullivan NEW British Prime Minister Gordon Brown meets with President Bush today. Preceding the trip was a rash of reports in the British media that the Anglo-American "special relationship" had its last hurrah with Bush and Tony Blair; London will now distance itself from Washington. Despite its large economy, Germany was very little use to Washington in the first Gulf War: It had a land-locked army, a constitution that forbade intervention abroad and a pacifist national sensibility. Washington needed allies with armies, intelligence services, strategic mobility and a tradition of upholding international order. Britain had all of them. Sometimes the Brits were more willing to intervene than Washington. It was over Kuwait that Lady Thatcher issued her famous encouragement: "This is no time to go wobbly, George." And onother article here: UK news the expectation generally is that the UK will continue to be close to the United States but perhaps not quite as close as it was…

Creating affordable homes blocked by housebuilders...
Move to create affordable homes is 'blocked by housebuilders' Britain's leading developers have been accused of blocking government plans to force them to build more affordable housing. Channel 4's Dispatches will tomorrow say that housebuilders and lobbyists working for them are boasting of having used 'overt political pressure' to 'secure safeguards against prescriptive... policies dictating size, type and affordability to developers'.
The Housing Minister, Yvette Cooper, last week said the government wanted 240,000 new homes a year by 2016, the vast majority built by the private sector. At least 70,000 of those are supposed to be in the 'affordable' category. An early draft of national planning policy shows that ministers wanted to force tough affordable housing targets on developers - and impose penalties on housebuilders which failed to comply...

Discovered - bacterium that converts light to energy...
'Bizarre' new bacterium ID'd at Yellowstone. The wonderland of Yellowstone National Park has yielded a new marvel — an unusual bacterium that converts light to energy. The discovery was made in a hot spring at the park where colorful mats of microbes drift in the warmth. "This thing was just bizarre," David M. Ward, a professor of microbial studies at Montana State University, said of the bacterium. Plants use photosynthesis to turn light into energy, of course, and so do some other bacteria. But, Ward said, the newly discovered Candidatus Chloracidobacterium thermophilum has "a new kind of photosynthesis. It uses the same kind of machinery, but has the parts in a different arrangement." The find is important for unraveling the history of photosynthesis, in determining how microbes efficiently harvest energy, he said in a phone interview. "We're running out of fossil fuel, so the more efficiently we can harvest light energy the better," Ward said…So if I try to fantasize what this will mean to us; in the future you’ll put some bacteria in your car… ;)

In reports first published by DEBKAfile, American naval and air forces intercepted two North Korean vessels clandestinely en route for Iran with cargoes of enriched uranium and nuclear equipment in the past month. The shutdown of Pongyong's nuclear facilities has made these items surplus to North Korea's requirements and the Islamic Republic was more than willing to pay a hefty price for the goods. On July 12, the second intercepted North Korean freighter was sunk in the Arabian Sea by torpedoes fired from a US submarine 100 miles southeast of the Iranian naval base-port of Chah Bahar. Delivery of its freight of enriched weapons-grade uranium and equipment and engines for manufacturing more fissile material including plutonium in its hold could have jump-forwarded Iran's nuclear bomb and warhead project, lopping off at least a year of work. For this Iran's rulers were ready to reportedly pay out a cool $500 million. A few hours earlier, President Bush received an intelligence briefing on the vessel, its freight and destination. Apparently the shipment was brought forward by several weeks to evade detection by UN nuclear inspectors scheduled to visit Pyongyang this week to verify the dismantling of its nuclear facilities. US airplanes had been tracking the freighter and picked up signs of radioactivity, indicating the presence of nuclear materials aboard…

Major expansion at area 51
The top-secret military reservation at Groom Lake, Nevada, long thought to be the Air Force’s test site for experimental aircraft (so experimental that it was reverse engineered from UFOs, if you buy the wildest conjecture), is expanding with the construction of several new buildings and roads, according to satellite footage. Speculation mounts that it may be part of an expanded Defense Department investment in experimental craft since 9/11: [Defense Technology International Editor-in-Chief Bill] Sweetman suggests “there is only one reason for a base like this: to flight-test hardware that is secret and visibly different from other aircraft.” The new hangar, he continues, might “include experimental platforms pushing the boundaries of stealth, particularly in terms of allowing aircraft to persist undetected around the clock, and experimental [unmanned aerial vehicles] and [unmanned combat aerial vehicles].”…I posted an article about the development of unmanned combat robots flying from Nevada…

US vs. Iran...Cold war...
U.S. vs. Iran: Cold War, Too. After three decades of festering tensions, the United States and Iran are now facing off in a full-fledged cold war. The new Cold War will take center stage this week, as President Bush dispatches Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to the Middle East for a last-ditch appeal to recalcitrant U.S. allies on Iraq. Their pitch to Sunni Arab regimes spooked by the bloc of countries and movements led by Shiite Persian Iran will be simple: Support Iraq as a buffer against Iran or face living under Tehran's growing shadow. In the new Cold War, the United States and Iran are using eerily familiar tools to undermine each other. Over the past 18 months, Washington has deployed a second carrier battleship group off Iran's coast; orchestrated two U.N. Security Council resolutions sanctioning Iranian financial institutions and military officials; arrested Iranian operatives in Iraq; allocated $75 million for this year and $108 million for next year to promote democracy in Iran; and reportedly begun covert operations that included disinformation campaigns and currency manipulation. Tehran, in turn, has allegedly increased supplies of roadside bombs, mortars and even 240-mm rockets to Iraqi militias; resupplied Hezbollah after its war with Israel; given Hamas tens of millions of dollars when international aid was cut off after its election; arrested Americans in Iran on charges of undermining Iran's national security; and reportedly provided small arms to its old Taliban enemies to use against U.S. troops in Afghanistan…Yes a war different from all wars before is going on..thats scary but probably…it has to be done…

Amazing CGI effect
Again this amazing CGI Effect: cool art 3d hard work of an amateur commercial. Show of a kind of war transformer

Us set to offer huge arms deal to Saudi Arabia and Middle East countries
U.S. Set to Offer Huge Arms Deal to Saudi Arabia. The Bush administration is preparing to ask Congress to approve an arms sale package for Saudi Arabia and its neighbors that is expected to eventually total $20 billion at a time when some United States officials contend that the Saudis are playing a counterproductive role in Iraq. Along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates are likely to receive equipment and weaponry from the arms sales under consideration, officials said. In general, the United States is interested in upgrading the countries’ air and missile defense systems, improving their navies and making modest improvements in their air forces, administration officials said, though not all the packages would be the same. Along with the announcement of formal talks with Persian Gulf allies on the arms package, Ms. Rice is planning to outline the new agreement to provide military aid to Israel, as well as a similar accord with Egypt.
The $30.4 billion being promised to Israel is $9.1 billion more than Israel has received over the past decade, an increase of nearly 43 percent. A senior administration official said the sizable increase was a result of Israel’s need to replace equipment expended in its war against Hezbollah in Lebanon last summer, as well as to maintain its advantage in advanced weaponry as other countries in the region modernize their forces…yes and last week we could read in the papers that probably France is selling some nuclear knowledge and materials to Lybia…

Iran will enrich uranium, but making bombs should be suicide...
Iran's message is softly spoken, yet clear: It will enrich uranium… Iran has issued its strongest signal to date that it will defy UN demands for a suspension of uranium enrichment - a possible route towards a nuclear bomb - threatening to respond to any further sanctions and accusing the Americans of "running away" from negotiations to end the crisis over the Iranian nuclear programme. Another senior Iranian official said that with almost 3,000 centrifuges now running at Natanz, "we have at the moment enough centrifuges to go to a bomb". But the official added that Iran was barred by its own security and defence doctrine, by parliament, and by a religious fatwa issued by the Supreme Leader, from building a bomb. The official added that if Iran produced a single bomb "what is it good for? If we attack Israeli with one bomb, America would attack us with thousands of bombs. It's suicide."…I guess that’s probably a true remark, but committing suicide…isn’t that some familiar behaviour for religious Islamic fanatics???

Marijuana study says the drug may increase psychosis risk
Study: Marijuana may increase psychosis risk. Using marijuana seems to increase the chance of becoming psychotic, researchers report in an analysis of past research that reignites the issue of whether pot is dangerous. The new review suggests that even infrequent use could raise the small but real risk of this serious mental illness by 40%. Doctors have long suspected a connection and say the latest findings underline the need to highlight marijuana's long-term risks. The research, paid for by the British Health Department, is being published Friday in medical journal The Lancet. "The available evidence now suggests that cannabis is not as harmless as many people think," said Dr. Stanley Zammit, one of the study's authors and a lecturer in the department of psychological medicine at Cardiff University.
The researchers said they couldn't prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of psychosis, a category of several disorders with schizophrenia being the most commonly known…

Giuliani is the surprise
Giuliani is the surprise of the presidential race. The money and momentum in the presidential race all may be on the Democratic side, but the closest thing to a big surprise is found in the Republican contest. However, it's in just those big states, with the largest haul of convention delegates, that Giuli ani shows his greatest strength. He leads the polls -- and not by small margins -- in California, Illinois, Florida, Ohio, New Jersey and, as expected, New York, among others. No candidate can lose a significant number of these states and expect to take the GOP nomination. Giuliani has been, without question, the surprise of the race. He's managed this with a smart and energetic campaign that has let him put a discreet distance between himself and Bush while burnishing his own anti-terrorism credentials. As he insisted to Republicans in Manchester, N.H., "Democrats don't understand the full nature and scope of the terrorist war against us." A Democratic president, he said, would "wave the white flag ... put us back on defence." W could not have said it better…

Two diabetes drugs double heart failure risk - says study
Patients taking either of the diabetes drugs Avandia or Actos face twice the risk of developing heart failure compared to people not on the popular medications, a new study finds. This means for every 50 patients with type 2 diabetes taking these drugs, one patient will develop heart failure within 26 months, according to the report released Friday and published in the August issue of Diabetes Care. "Both Avandia and Actos double the risk of heart failure," concluded the lead author of the first study, Dr. Sonal Singh, an assistant professor of internal medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. "We know these drugs increase the risk, but we found the risk is more substantial than suspected. This occurs at even the lowest dose and among young patients."…be aware of this heart faillure risk if you use these medication too and ask your doctor, or maybe you’ll print the whole article and show that to him/her…

Scooter oap in 8mph chase
THIS plucky pensioner led police on a low-speed chase around Middlesbrough - and then gave officers the slip. The lukewarm pursuit started after he caused traffic chaos by crawling down the fast lane of a busy dual carriageway. Police asked the stubborn senior citizen to pull over. But he defiantly cranked his battery-powered mobility scooter up to its top speed - 8mph - and somehow managed to escape their attention. “The two in the police car looked a bit sheepish to have lost a battery-powered scooter. I bet they’ll be the toast of the nick.”…

Money stash of 207 million drugs dollars...
Not Your Average Drug Bust... Suspect Wanted in Mexico Found in Wheaton Restaurant. The way U.S. and Mexican authorities describe 44-year-old Zhenli Ye Gon, he might have sprung from some pulp novelist's overheated imagination. Born in Shanghai, he lived in Mexico and ran a pharmaceuticals company -- a front, authorities allege, that supplied Mexican drug cartels with massive quantities of a chemical used to make the street drug methamphetamine. Police raided his luxurious Mexico City home in March, carting off what they said was $207 million, most of it in $100 bills that had been stashed behind false walls and in closets. The U.S. government called it "the largest single drug cash seizure the world has ever seen."…

Genicide flip of Obama
Genocide Flip. Liberals on Iraq... Barack Obama says preventing genocide isn’t a good enough reason to stay in Iraq. “By that argument you would have 300,000 troops in the Congo right now — where millions have been slaughtered as a consequence of ethnic strife — which we haven’t done,” he told the Associated Press. “We would be deploying unilaterally and occupying the Sudan, which we haven’t done. Those of us who care about Darfur don’t think it would be a good idea.”…

Clinton - Obama feud
Clinton-Obama feud: Behind the scenes… You cannot make peace with your friends, only with your enemies. But you cannot shake the hand of someone whose fist is clenched. On the surface, these two conflicting notions lie behind the dust-up between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama during the Democratic debate in Charleston, S.C., this week. But, as my interviews with two top Obama and Clinton aides showed Wednesday, there is a deeper conflict: The Clinton campaign is selling "strength and experience," while the Obama campaign is selling "fundamental change." Onstage at the debate, Clinton and Obama took different stands when asked if, as president, they would meet with the leaders of five nations who are hostile to the United States. Obama said he would hold such meetings and Clinton said she would not.The next day, Clinton denounced Obama's view as "irresponsible and frankly naive." Obama bashed back, saying, "If you want to talk about irresponsibility and naiveté, look at her vote to authorize George Bush to send our troops into Iraq without an exit plan."…

Prostitute said a cop supplied her with drugs and money for sex...
Officers' accuser found credible… When a convicted prostitute said a police officer supplied her with drugs and money for sex, and that she had sex with another officer in an undercover vehicle, police and city officials were stunned. Nobody wanted to believe her. The police papers confirm Gibson's story, first published in the Herald-Tribune earlier this month. The claims became the buzz of the law enforcement and legal community. Pritchett and Anderson, police said, resigned for "personal reasons" after investigators told them about Gibson's allegations. At the time, the police called the investigation an "informal inquiry." Neither former officer could be reached Wednesday.A formal investigation was not started because the head of internal affairs, Lt. Warren Merriman, said he wanted an independent review by the state attorney's office for possible criminal charges. Biddlecome is the only officer to provide a statement to investigators. He resigned after a formal inquiry began and apologized for his actions in an e-mail this week to the Herald-Tribune. A separate allegation was dismissed, according to documents, after Gibson said she smoked crack cocaine in front of another detective and was asked to perform oral sex on him…

44 quotes of Albert Ellis
44 quotes and quotations by Albert Ellis… I post this URL today because of the death of Albert Ellis, Ph.D. on July 24, 2007. Dr. Ellis, who was 93 years old, died of natural causes. At the time of his death, he was President Emeritus of the Albert Ellis Institute in New York City. Dr. Ellis was born in Pittsburgh in 1913, grew up in New York City, and received a master’s degree and doctorate in clinical psychology from Columbia University. As a practicing psychoanalyst from 1947 to 1953, Dr. Ellis grew increasingly doubtful about the efficacy of that form of psychotherapy, concerned that no amount of talk would help his clients if they failed to take action against their habitual thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By late 1953, he had stopped calling himself a psychoanalyst and begun developing Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), an action-oriented therapy aimed at making emotional and behavioral change through challenging self-defeating thoughts…
