Scary beast of Dartmoor was a big pet dog
That's not the Beast of Dartmoor... it's my pet dog. When a picture emerged of a hulking beast stalking the moors, one woman wasn't chilled by rumours of its gaping jaws, glowing eyes and blood-curdling howls. That's because Lucinda Reid recognised the "Demon of Dartmoor" as ... her pet dog. The two-year-old Newfoundland - called Troy - weighs in at a whopping 12 stones. But, far from being ferocious, he's as gentle as a lamb…with beautiful pictures of that gentle newfoundlander…

Officer pushes reporter
Officer pushes reporter, an officer in confrontation with reporters on a restricted area. Reporter 100% wrong!! This reported crossed a police line in a federally secured area and sprinted for the gate. If the officer had NOT stopped her he probably would have been disciplined for allowing her to enter the secured area. Reporters do not have the right to go anywhere they want just because they have a camera crew. Especially, because she was trying to question him on a personal matter…

Radioactive Boy Scout charged with radioactive experiments
'Radioactive Boy Scout' charged with stealing detectors. A man who became the subject of a book called “The Radioactive Boy Scout” after trying to build a nuclear reactor in a shed as a teenager has been charged with stealing 16 smoke detectors. Police say it was a possible effort to experiment with radioactive materials. Hahn’s first brush with authorities came in August 1994, after police stopped him during an investigation into neighborhood tire thefts. Officers found radioactive materials, chemicals, rocks, plastic and glass bottles and two exploded pipes in his car, Maierle said. In a subsequent interview with a state health official, Hahn said he had been trying to produce energy and hoped it would help him earn his Eagle Scout badge, according to the Harper’s article. Hahn also acknowledged having a backyard laboratory in a potting shed at his mother’s home in Oakland County’s Commerce Township, the article said…would anyone like such a weird dude in the neigbourhood…I guess not, he belonges in a psychiatric facility and let’s hope he can be cured…

Guantanamo insurgents are criminals
Guantanamo, the Day after… "When insurgents are seen as criminals, they lose public support," Petraeus and Amos wrote. Illegitimate actions, including "unlawful detention, torture, and punishment without trial," are "self-defeating, even against insurgents who conceal themselves amid noncombatants and flout the law." If their words were applied to Guantanamo, it would not be a ringing endorsement…

Afghanistan is providing close to 95% of worlds heroin...
Another record poppy crop in Afghanistan… Afghanistan will produce another record poppy harvest this year that cements its status as the world's near-sole supplier of the heroin source, yet a furious debate over how to reverse the trend is stalling proposals to cut the crop, U.S. officials say. As President Bush prepares for weekend talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, divisions within the U.S. administration and among NATO allies have delayed release of a $475 million counternarcotics program for Afghanistan, where intelligence officials see growing links between drugs and the Taliban, the officials said. "Afghanistan is providing close to 95 percent of the world's heroin," the State Department's top counternarcotics official, Tom Schweich, said at a recent conference. "That makes it almost a sole-source supplier" and presents a situation "unique in world history." Almost all the heroin from Afghanistan makes its way to Europe; most of the heroin in the U.S. comes from Latin America. Afghanistan last year accounted for 92 percent of global opium production, compared with 70 percent in 2000 and 52 percent a decade earlier. The higher yields in Afghanistan brought world production to a record high of 7,286 tons in 2006, 43 percent more than in 2005.But, in fact, many question whether this is the right approach with Afghanistan mired in poverty and in the throes of an insurgency run by the Taliban and residual al-Qaida forces. Along with Britain, whose troops patrol Helmand, elements in the State Department, U.S. Agency for International Development, the Defence Department and White House Office of National Drug Control Policy have expressed concern, saying that more raids will drive farmers with no other income to join extremists…

My comment: the Taliban and organisations like Al Qaeda are financing terrorism with the production of heroine. If this is all going to Europe alone…our addicts will pay at least € 145.720.000.000, 00 at the lowest street market price (for example in the Netherlands in 2007) at the highest prices it should be double because a gram heroine does now 20 – 40 euro in the streets…When you fight a dragon, you have to cut the head of and be aware that the dragons of heroin might have more heads than you know…the farmers and the dealers in the streets are both the lowest in hierarchy in drug traffic. There is some intelligence needed to find the heads and cut them all totally off…

Discovered - bacterium that converts light to energy...
'Bizarre' new bacterium ID'd at Yellowstone. The wonderland of Yellowstone National Park has yielded a new marvel — an unusual bacterium that converts light to energy. The discovery was made in a hot spring at the park where colorful mats of microbes drift in the warmth. "This thing was just bizarre," David M. Ward, a professor of microbial studies at Montana State University, said of the bacterium. Plants use photosynthesis to turn light into energy, of course, and so do some other bacteria. But, Ward said, the newly discovered Candidatus Chloracidobacterium thermophilum has "a new kind of photosynthesis. It uses the same kind of machinery, but has the parts in a different arrangement." The find is important for unraveling the history of photosynthesis, in determining how microbes efficiently harvest energy, he said in a phone interview. "We're running out of fossil fuel, so the more efficiently we can harvest light energy the better," Ward said…So if I try to fantasize what this will mean to us; in the future you’ll put some bacteria in your car… ;)

US sinks North Korean ship bound for Iran...
US Sinks North Korean Ship Bound for Iran. "How close were we to seeing an armed nuclear conflict?" In reports first published by DEBKAfile, American naval and air forces intercepted two North Korean vessels clandestinely en route for Iran with cargoes of enriched uranium and nuclear equipment in the past month. The shutdown of Pongyong's nuclear facilities has made these items surplus to North Korea's requirements and the Islamic Republic was more than willing to pay a hefty price for the goods. On July 12, the second intercepted North Korean freighter was sunk in the Arabian Sea by torpedoes fired from a US submarine 100 miles southeast of the Iranian naval base-port of Chah Bahar. Delivery of its freight of enriched weapons-grade uranium and equipment and engines for manufacturing more fissile material including plutonium in its hold could have jump-forwarded Iran's nuclear bomb and warhead project, lopping off at least a year of work. For this Iran's rulers were ready to reportedly pay out a cool $500 million. A few hours earlier, President Bush received an intelligence briefing on the vessel, its freight and destination. Apparently the shipment was brought forward by several weeks to evade detection by UN nuclear inspectors scheduled to visit Pyongyang this week to verify the dismantling of its nuclear facilities. US airplanes had been tracking the freighter and picked up signs of radioactivity, indicating the presence of nuclear materials aboard…

Major expansion at area 51
The top-secret military reservation at Groom Lake, Nevada, long thought to be the Air Force’s test site for experimental aircraft (so experimental that it was reverse engineered from UFOs, if you buy the wildest conjecture), is expanding with the construction of several new buildings and roads, according to satellite footage. Speculation mounts that it may be part of an expanded Defense Department investment in experimental craft since 9/11: [Defense Technology International Editor-in-Chief Bill] Sweetman suggests “there is only one reason for a base like this: to flight-test hardware that is secret and visibly different from other aircraft.” The new hangar, he continues, might “include experimental platforms pushing the boundaries of stealth, particularly in terms of allowing aircraft to persist undetected around the clock, and experimental [unmanned aerial vehicles] and [unmanned combat aerial vehicles].”…I posted an article about the development of unmanned combat robots flying from Nevada…

US vs. Iran...Cold war...
U.S. vs. Iran: Cold War, Too. After three decades of festering tensions, the United States and Iran are now facing off in a full-fledged cold war. The new Cold War will take center stage this week, as President Bush dispatches Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to the Middle East for a last-ditch appeal to recalcitrant U.S. allies on Iraq. Their pitch to Sunni Arab regimes spooked by the bloc of countries and movements led by Shiite Persian Iran will be simple: Support Iraq as a buffer against Iran or face living under Tehran's growing shadow. In the new Cold War, the United States and Iran are using eerily familiar tools to undermine each other. Over the past 18 months, Washington has deployed a second carrier battleship group off Iran's coast; orchestrated two U.N. Security Council resolutions sanctioning Iranian financial institutions and military officials; arrested Iranian operatives in Iraq; allocated $75 million for this year and $108 million for next year to promote democracy in Iran; and reportedly begun covert operations that included disinformation campaigns and currency manipulation. Tehran, in turn, has allegedly increased supplies of roadside bombs, mortars and even 240-mm rockets to Iraqi militias; resupplied Hezbollah after its war with Israel; given Hamas tens of millions of dollars when international aid was cut off after its election; arrested Americans in Iran on charges of undermining Iran's national security; and reportedly provided small arms to its old Taliban enemies to use against U.S. troops in Afghanistan…Yes a war different from all wars before is going on..thats scary but probably…it has to be done…

Amazing CGI effect
Again this amazing CGI Effect: cool art 3d hard work of an amateur commercial. Show of a kind of war transformer

Us set to offer huge arms deal to Saudi Arabia and Middle East countries
U.S. Set to Offer Huge Arms Deal to Saudi Arabia. The Bush administration is preparing to ask Congress to approve an arms sale package for Saudi Arabia and its neighbors that is expected to eventually total $20 billion at a time when some United States officials contend that the Saudis are playing a counterproductive role in Iraq. Along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates are likely to receive equipment and weaponry from the arms sales under consideration, officials said. In general, the United States is interested in upgrading the countries’ air and missile defense systems, improving their navies and making modest improvements in their air forces, administration officials said, though not all the packages would be the same. Along with the announcement of formal talks with Persian Gulf allies on the arms package, Ms. Rice is planning to outline the new agreement to provide military aid to Israel, as well as a similar accord with Egypt.
The $30.4 billion being promised to Israel is $9.1 billion more than Israel has received over the past decade, an increase of nearly 43 percent. A senior administration official said the sizable increase was a result of Israel’s need to replace equipment expended in its war against Hezbollah in Lebanon last summer, as well as to maintain its advantage in advanced weaponry as other countries in the region modernize their forces…yes and last week we could read in the papers that probably France is selling some nuclear knowledge and materials to Lybia…

Woman keeps 9 people handcuffed in her home for years
Woman Charged With Keeping 9 Starving People In Home. Police in Port St. Lucie are trying to find out the identities of nine people found living with a 62-year-old woman in what officials described as deplorable conditions. Capt. Scott Bartal with the Port St. Lucie Police Department said Judith Leekin kept five mentally disabled adults and four teenagers captive in her Southwest Hawthorne Drive home. "There were claims by people in that house that they were locked in there, and they were bound with handcuff ties," Bartal said. Bartal told WPBF News 25 the captives were malnourished and handcuffed together when Leekin left the home. He said some of the teens, ages 15 to 17, had scars on their backs and burn marks on their bodies…

Cheating politicians and preachers...
You’re Cheating Heart: Why Pols Don't Practice What They Preach. The Psychology Behind Hypocritical, Philandering Public Officials. After admitting to using escort services provided by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, known as the D.C. Madam, Sen. David Vitter, R- La., became the latest public figure to get caught preaching one thing and practicing quite another. Psychologists offer several reasons why politicians and other public figures, such as ministers, say one thing and do the opposite. 'Practice what you preach' is an old saw, but there are plenty of charismatic figures who are known to be mean and nasty in their home life," said Paul Ekman, an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of California Medical School in San Francisco. "These people make an exception for themselves. The very fact of their own misbehavior is the reason they preach to others," he said. "As with politicians, it's the same psychological phenomenon when preachers do the same thing… They have to appeal to the public, but it is not necessarily what they really believe," Kuriansky said….

Switching off the Iraq war is not an option...
Switching off the Iraq war is not an American option. These have been traumatic weeks for the White House, as its strategy of holding the fort on Iraq is turning into the political equivalent of the Little Big Horn. Amid national war fatigue, congressional Democrats are pushing hard to impose a legislative deadline for military withdrawals. An initial assessment report imposed on the administration by Congress and published on July 12 showed, at best, mixed success on a series of key benchmarks to judge improvement in Iraq. Even Republican lawmakers are revolting, and two prominent senators, Richard Lugar and John Warner, last week advocated a realignment of American combat troops by as early as next year, even if their proposal did not set a deadline. Last week also, The Washington Post did little to help the Bush administration's case when it published a story by Bob Woodward highlighting the CIA's doubts about amelioration in Iraq. According to Woodward, CIA Director Michael Hayden told the Iraq Study Group last November that "the inability of the [Iraqi] government to govern seems irreversible," before affirming that he couldn't "point to any milestone or checkpoint where we can turn this thing around." Later in the interview Hayden did qualify his pessimism somewhat by suggesting that a functional government in Iraq was not achievable "in the short term." Skeptics will respond that the same language was used in Vietnam. Victory was always around the corner; but never was. However, Iraq and Vietnam are very different places. The way to win an insurgency is, often, by lowering oneself into the minutiae of a place. It takes great patience, unity at home, and an obligation not to lose one's head. None of these are present today in the US. No one can deny that Iraq has turned into a fiasco, but you don't deal with a fiasco by just trying to switch it off…

Russia withdraws from arms treaty
Russia withdraws from arms treaty. Russia on Saturday suspended its participation in a key European arms control treaty that governs deployment of troops on the continent, the Kremlin said, a move that threatened to further aggravate Moscow's already tense relations with the West. In Brussels, NATO spokesman James Appathurai condemned the decision. "NATO regrets this decision by the Russian Federation. It is a step in the wrong direction," Appathurai said. The treaty is seen as a key element in maintaining stability in Europe. It establishes limitations on countries' deployment of tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery, attack helicopters and combat aircraft. Withdrawal from the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty would allow Moscow to build up forces near its borders…the cold war 2 is coming to Europe again???

Spoiling the earth with concerts
A Daily Mail investigation has revealed that far from saving the planet, the extravaganza will generate a huge fuel bill, acres of garbage, thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions, and a mileage total equal to the movement of an army. artists flight distance = 222,623.63 miles, carbon emissions produced by all concerts = 31,500 tons, carbon emissions including TV audience = 74,500 tons. Maybe some won’t believe it but, yes it’s right: The most conservative assessment of the flights being taken by its superstars is that they are flying an extraordinary 222,623.63 miles between them to get to the various concerts - nearly nine times the circumference of the world. The true environmental cost, as they transport their technicians, dancers and support staff, is likely to be far higher. The total carbon footprint of the event, taking into account the artists' and spectators' travel to the concert, and the energy consumption on the day, is likely to be at least 31,500 tonnes of carbon emissions, according to John Buckley of www.carbonfootprint.com who specialises in such calculations. Throw in the television audience and it comes to a staggering 74,500 tonnes. In comparison, the average Briton produces ten tonnes in a year. The concert will also generate some 1,025 tonnes of waste at the concert stadiums - much of which will go directly into landfill sites…

Roughly 70,000 Jehovah's Witnesses are converging at the Cow Palace in Daly City for a series of conventions this summer, and they'll be knocking on tens of thousands of doors along the way. By the end of the summer, each believer will have attended a three-day convention that consists of intensive Bible study, prayer, song, mass baptisms and a biblical drama. They also will have invited thousands of perfect strangers. After 33 years of door-to-door proselytizing, Lovelace can count five people she's led to Bible study, which led to baptism.
