Judge sends 3 lawyers off to jail...
Judge sends 3 fen-phen lawyers off to jail. BOND REVOKED, THEY MAY BE THERE UNTIL TRIAL. Melbourne Mills' face went from shock to disbelief yesterday as he and co-defendants Shirley Cunningham Jr. and William Gallion were ordered out of a Covington federal courtroom to jail. Just seconds earlier, U.S. District Judge William Bertelsman granted the three suspended lawyers' request to delay a criminal trial until January but immediately revoked the suspended lawyers' bond. As Bertelsman walked off the bench, Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for Gallion, began to protest as the courtroom erupted. Bertelsman cut him off.
"I told you that's what I was going to do," Bertelsman said as he left the courtroom. Mills, Cunningham and Gallion, who were indicted in June on one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, were being held at the Boone County jail last night and may remain there until the January trial. The three suspended lawyers, who used to practice in Lexington, had been free on their own recognizance since June. Defense attorneys for the three men declined to comment on whether they would appeal the decision. Mills, 76, Cunningham, 52, and Gallion, 56, are accused of taking $64 million of a $200 million diet-drug settlement that should have gone to 440 clients in a 2001 Boone Circuit Court case…

Michael Dick scoured the streets of Sudbury, Suffolk, and looked through the electoral register searching for Lisa, 31, reports Metro. After drawing a blank, he went to the Suffolk Free Press newspaper, which ran a story on his search. New Iraq report to warn of attack...
New Iraq report to warn of attack… The Bush administration is finishing a National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq that paints a sobering picture of a mature civil war unlikely to be snuffed out through political progress, according to officials involved in the report’s preparation. A late draft of the document warns of the possibility of a spectacular attack in conjunction with a crucial mid-September assessment by Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador in Iraq. With the Petraeus-Crocker report looming, some administration officials say they fear a coordinated onslaught like the Tet offensive, a surprise country-wide series of attacks that produced a psychological victory for Vietnamese Communists in 1968. “We’re concerned about the desire of Al Qaeda to undertake some Tet offensive-style attack in conjunction with the Petraeus report to influence political opinion to the extent that people would lose their stomach for the fight,” one of the officials said…

'I have seen the horror'
I have seen the horror. Al Qaeda is guilty of monstrosities in Iraq - no matter what anyone says. Amid all this talk of timetables for the War in Iraq, blurred as they are by a strange lemming-like compulsion to declare the "surge" strategy a failure almost before it actually began, one deadline looms larger with each passing day: It's time for a reckoning with the truth. Anyone who says Al Qaeda is not one of the primary problems in Iraq is simply ignorant of the facts.
I, like everyone else, will have to wait for September's report from Gen. Petraeus before making more definitive judgments. But I know for certain that three things are different in Iraq now from any other time I've seen it.
1. Iraqis are uniting across sectarian lines to drive Al Qaeda in all its disguises out of Iraq, and they are empowered by the success they are having, each one creating a ripple effect of active citizenship.
2. The Iraqi Army is much more capable now than it was in 2005. It is not ready to go it alone, but if we keep working, that day will come.3. Gen. Petraeus is running the show. Petraeus may well prove to be to counterinsurgency warfare what Patton was to tank battles with Rommel, or what Churchill was to the Nazis.
And yes, in case there is any room for question, Al Qaeda still is a serious problem in Iraq, one that can be defeated. Until we do, real and lasting security will elude both the Iraqis and us.

Defence spending - House approves Pentagon budget
House approves $460B Pentagon budget. The House approved modest changes to President Bush's record Pentagon budget proposal early Sunday, but Democrats signaled plans to resume a more contentious debate over the Iraq war after the August recess. The House's $459.6 billion version of the defense budget, approved on a 395-13 vote, would add money for equipment for the National Guard and Reserve, provide for 12,000 additional soldiers and Marines, and increase spending for defense health care and military housing.
The adjourned until after Labor Day minutes after the vote a little over an hour past midnight.

Getting Iraq wrong
Getting Iraq Wrong… The unfolding catastrophe in Iraq has condemned the political judgment of a president. But it has also condemned the judgment of many others, myself included, who as commentators supported the invasion. Many of us believed, as an Iraqi exile friend told me the night the war started, that it was the only chance the members of his generation would have to live in freedom in their own country. How distant a dream that now seems. As a former denizen of Harvard, I’ve had to learn that a sense of reality doesn’t always flourish in elite institutions. It is the street virtue par excellence. Bus drivers can display a shrewder grasp of what’s what than Nobel Prize winners. The only way any of us can improve our grasp of reality is to confront the world every day and learn, mostly from our mistakes, what works and what doesn’t. Yet even lengthy experience can fail us in life and in politics. Experience can imprison decision-makers in worn-out solutions while blinding them to the untried remedy that does the trick. In private life, we pay the price of our own mistakes. In public life, a politician’s mistakes are first paid by others. I went to northern Iraq in 1992. I saw what Saddam Hussein did to the Kurds. From that moment forward, I believed he had to go. My convictions had all the authority of personal experience, but for that very reason, I let emotion carry me past the hard questions, like: Can Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites hold together in peace what Saddam Hussein held together by terror?
My comment:
The dictator Tito kept Yugoslavia together, in Romania Ceausescu, and in Zimbabwe we have the - probably not to stop – Total moron Mugabe…the list could easily be much longer and in all this cases, from the past, now and in the future…the people in those countries are poor sad and suppressed by selfish, stealing and corrupted idiots, who were and are responsible for bringing their people and neighbour countries in great dangers…all of them should be stopped…if that countries will be divided afterwards by their local religious or cultural differences between the people…it should be so…Yugoslavia is split up and people can choose where they will live…

UK MI6 could have capture Osama Bin Laden, but didn't...
UK wanted US to rule out Bin Laden torture. Ministers insisted that British secret agents would only be allowed to pass intelligence to the CIA to help it capture Osama bin Laden if the agency promised he would not be tortured, it has emerged. MI6 believed it was close to finding the al-Qaida leader in Afghanistan in 1998, and again the next year. The plan was for MI6 to hand the CIA vital information about Bin Laden. Ministers including Robin Cook, the then foreign secretary, gave their approval on condition that the CIA gave assurances he would be treated humanely. The plot is revealed in a 75-page report by parliament's intelligence and security committee on rendition, the practice of flying detainees to places where they may be tortured. "In 1998, SIS [MI6] believed that it might be able to obtain actionable intelligence that might enable the CIA to capture Osama bin Laden," the committee says in its report. It adds: "Given that this might have resulted in him being rendered from Afghanistan to the US, SIS sought ministerial approval. This was given provided that the CIA gave assurances regarding humane treatment." British intelligence made a similar request in 1999, and obtained the same response from Whitehall, but in the event MI6 did not provide the information…

Exclusive footage shows British soldiers in Afghanistan being told to leave heroin plants alone… Dramatic film shot has revealed that British troops in Afghanistan are told to leave heroin-producing opium crops untouched - contradicting Government claims it is committed to wiping out the drug. The footage shows soldiers fighting the Taliban in a field of opium poppies. One admits he wants to throw a grenade into "their beloved" plants, but says he would get "the telling-off of a lifetime". The MoD said last night it was not the troops' role to destroy crops but to provide security so farmers could be encouraged to grow alternatives.

US - UK still special columnist John o'Sullivan NEW British Prime Minister Gordon Brown meets with President Bush today. Preceding the trip was a rash of reports in the British media that the Anglo-American "special relationship" had its last hurrah with Bush and Tony Blair; London will now distance itself from Washington. Despite its large economy, Germany was very little use to Washington in the first Gulf War: It had a land-locked army, a constitution that forbade intervention abroad and a pacifist national sensibility. Washington needed allies with armies, intelligence services, strategic mobility and a tradition of upholding international order. Britain had all of them. Sometimes the Brits were more willing to intervene than Washington. It was over Kuwait that Lady Thatcher issued her famous encouragement: "This is no time to go wobbly, George." And onother article here: UK news the expectation generally is that the UK will continue to be close to the United States but perhaps not quite as close as it was…

Creating affordable homes blocked by housebuilders...
Move to create affordable homes is 'blocked by housebuilders' Britain's leading developers have been accused of blocking government plans to force them to build more affordable housing. Channel 4's Dispatches will tomorrow say that housebuilders and lobbyists working for them are boasting of having used 'overt political pressure' to 'secure safeguards against prescriptive... policies dictating size, type and affordability to developers'.
The Housing Minister, Yvette Cooper, last week said the government wanted 240,000 new homes a year by 2016, the vast majority built by the private sector. At least 70,000 of those are supposed to be in the 'affordable' category. An early draft of national planning policy shows that ministers wanted to force tough affordable housing targets on developers - and impose penalties on housebuilders which failed to comply...

Digging a subway in soggy Amsterdam
Soggy Amsterdam's test: digging a subwayAMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Seventeenth-century masons built Amsterdam on a foundation of wooden poles planted in soggy, sandy ground, leaving behind a beautiful architectural museum — but one with walls prone to sinking or crumbling without warning. So how do you dig a subway under it? Very carefully…Construction of a new "North-South" line for this city of canals and rivers began in 2003, and is presenting Dutch engineers, famed for their ingenuity in keeping this waterlogged nation dry, with devilish challenges. "It's probably better that people don't see this," said Bert van de Zande of Strukton, the contractor responsible for this part of the project, pointing to I-beams supporting the building's main columns. Strukton workers eventually will dig a 60-foot-deep trench under the station, and connect it to the IJ River which flows directly behind."It'll be the world's most expensive covered canal," Van de Zande said. When all is ready, a segment of concrete tunnel 450 feet long will be buoyed with air like a submarine, floated into the trench, and then allowed to settle gently into place…

Police task is to fight against criminals and terrorists
The Way We Live Now…Policing Terrorism. When terrorists tried to blow up civilians in London and Glasgow, Gordon Brown, the new British prime minister, responded in his own distinctive way. What had just been narrowly averted, he said, was not a new jihadist act of war but instead a criminal act. As if to underscore the point, Brown instructed his ministers that the phrase “war on terror” was no longer to be used and, indeed, that officials were no longer even to employ the word “Muslim” in connection with the terrorism crisis. In remarks to reporters, Brown’s new home secretary, Jacqui Smith, articulated the basic message. “Let us be clear,” she said, “terrorists are criminals, whose victims come from all walks of life, communities and religions.”…

A police dog rushed upstairs and, finding a woman in bed, proceeded to sink its teeth into her arms. Giant lion-eating chimps in Congolese jungle
Found: the giant lion-eating chimps of the magic forest Deep in the Congolese jungle is a band of apes that, according to local legend, kill lions, catch fish and even howl at the moon. Local hunters speak of massive creatures that seem to be some sort of hybrid between a chimp and a gorilla. Early speculation that the apes may be some yeti-like new species or a chimp/gorilla hybrid proved unfounded, but the truth has turned out to be in many ways even more fascinating. They are actually a population of super-sized chimps with a unique culture - and it seems, a taste for big cat flesh…

Bush will be a winner
Why Bush Will Be A Winner. I suppose I'll merely expose myself to harmless ridicule if I make the following assertion: George W. Bush's presidency will probably be a successful one. Let's step back from the unnecessary mistakes and the self-inflicted wounds that have characterized the Bush administration. Let's look at the broad forest rather than the often unlovely trees. What do we see? First, no second terrorist attack on U.S. soil -- not something we could have taken for granted. Second, a strong economy -- also something that wasn't inevitable. And third, and most important, a war in Iraq that has been very difficult, but where -- despite some confusion engendered by an almost meaningless "benchmark" report last week -- we now seem to be on course to a successful outcome. And what happens when voters realize in November 2008 that, if they choose a Democrat for president, they'll also get a Democratic Congress and therefore liberal Supreme Court justices? Many Americans will recoil from the prospect of being governed by an unchecked triumvirate of Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. So the chances of a Republican winning the presidency in 2008 aren't bad. What it comes down to is this: If Petraeus succeeds in Iraq, and a Republican wins in 2008, Bush will be viewed as a successful president…
