Son of Dutch military chief killed in Afghanistan
Son of Dutch military chief killed in Afghanistan. The son of the Netherlands’ top military officer was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan early this morning, one day after his father was made head of the Dutch armed forces. Lieutenant Dennis van Uhm, 23, was among two Dutch soldiers killed in the blast seven miles northwest of their military base, Camp Holland, in Uruzgan province, the Dutch defence ministry said. The second dead soldier was not fully identified but was said to be 22 years old. The military insisted today that there was nothing to suggest the commander’s son was deliberately targeted. However there were fears that the deaths could further erode public and political support for the Dutch mission, already at a low ebb….

Rush hour in Japanese subway
Rush hour in a Japanese subway… Japanese subways are known for running on time. Millions of people take the subway to and from work every day. Rush hour crowds are unbelievable. But the trains remain on time. As many people as possible are packed into the trains. Those who can't fit comfortably are not left behind. Uniformed attendants cram them into the cars. I don't think I would be happy with this!

Are You Still With Me Steve?
This is nasty. This guy loses consciousness three times in this fighter jet when the plane does the spin and pulls too many G's. But he bounces back really quick.

McCain's unorthodox campaign
McCain readies unorthodox campaign. For reasons of financial necessity, personal preference and plain politics, John McCain is gearing up to run one of the least traditional presidential campaigns in recent history. The problem is that even prominent strategists within McCain’s own party wonder if his unorthodox strategy will work. Facing the prospect of competing against a Democrat who is on track to shatter every fundraising record — and confronted by his own inability to rake in large bundles of cash — McCain and his key advisers have largely been forced into devising a three-pronged strategy that they hope can turn their general election weaknesses into strengths. McCain will lean heavily on the well-funded Republican National Committee. He will merge key functions of his campaign hierarchy with the RNC while also relying on an unconventional structure of 10 regional campaign mangers. And finally — and perhaps most importantly — McCain will rely on free media to an unprecedented degree to get out his message in a fashion that aims to not only minimize his financial disadvantage but also drive a triangulated contrast among himself, the Democratic nominee and President Bush. McCain advisers acknowledge they have little choice but to seek free entry into the media marketplace, as they have no chance of matching Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton in a dollar-for-dollar ad war, given that the Arizona senator’s fundraising totals pale in comparison to both his prospective opponents and the Bush-Cheney political machine…

The democrats wimp factor
The Democrats’ Wimp Factor. As Obama's patriotism is questioned, he's starting to look more and more like John Kerry in '04. The specter of John Kerry in 2004 is beginning to haunt the Democrats in 2008. It is the specter of wimpy campaigns past. It showed up, like Banquo's ghost, at the debate Wednesday night in Philadelphia, particularly when Hillary Clinton joined with ABC's George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson to nip away at the edges of Barack Obama's patriotism. Between the questions about Obama's meager association with William Ayers, a former Weatherman, and the suspicions raised by his lack of a flag lapel pin, the likely nominee is slowly being turned into John Kerry. He is becoming, in other words, a candidate who may be mostly right about national security but who will lack the Red State street cred to carry his point—and the election…

Barack Obama makes a one-fingered gesture while speaking of Hillary Clinton
This is one of those political moments that really needs few words. We'll no doubt hear much more about this incident in coming days. Right now, we'll just leave this video for Ticket readers to view and judge for themselves. It's Sen. Barack Obama, according to the caption on YouTube posted just minutes ago, speaking to a friendly crowd in Raleigh, N.C., today. He's talking critically about his opponent, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, and the kind of distasteful gotcha politics that occur in Washington. And he says, "That's all right. Sen. Clinton looked in her element." Watch the video right then. The presidential candidate raises his right hand to seemingly scratch his cheek. He doesn't use his whole hand though. Just one finger. Briefly. A couple of strokes.

Hillary Clinton - no wimps in the White House...
Hillary Clinton: No Wimps in the White House Stepping up her criticism of her rival's performance in ABC News' primetime debate on Wednesday, Clinton, D-N.Y., told the FOX affiliate in Philadelphia, "I know he spent all day yesterday complaining about the hard questions he was asked. Being asked tough questions in a debate is nothing like the pressures you face inside the White House. In fact, when the going gets tough, you just can't walk away because we're going to have some very tough decisions that we have to make."When pressed, Clinton continued the criticism, adding, "When the going gets tough you can't run away. And it's going to be tough going to deal with these hard problems; getting out of Iraq in the right way, turning the economy around, getting universal health care, ending our dependence on foreign oil. The special interests are going to be a lot tougher than 90 minutes of questions from two journalists and we need a president who is going to be up there fighting everyday for the American people and not complain about how much pressure there is, and how hard the questions are."…

Literal thriller
The lyrics to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” are taken literally (and in pictures) in this clever accompanying montage. Lots of quick fire gags in here…can you spot them? (nsfw)…

Clinton draws UFO endorsement
Clinton draws UFO endorsement. With Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign wheezing, it would be logical to assume the New York senator would appreciate every endorsement she can get. But it ain't necessarily so. This weekend in Gaithersburg, Md., just outside the nation's capital, the only registered congressional lobbyist advocating UFO disclosure hearings -- Steve Bassett -- is staging his annual X-Conference. Its keynote speaker is Apollo astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who has long pressed for declassification of government UFO data and has labeled the enduring cover-up as potentially "a case of criminal culpability."
But undoubtedly the most annoying X-Conference speaker to a Clinton-bashing law firm called Judicial Watch is a guy named Grant Cameron…
