Standard operating procedure - teaser trailer
Is it possible for a photograph to change the world? Photographs taken by soldiers in Abu Ghraib prison changed the war in Iraq and changed America’s image of itself. Yet, a central mystery remains. Did the notorious Abu Ghraib photographs constitute evidence of systematic abuse by the American military, or were they documenting the aberrant behavior of a few “bad apples”? We set out to examine the context of these photographs. Why were they taken? What was happening outside the frame? We talked directly to the soldiers who took the photographs and who were in the photographs. Who are these people?

And when people ask her how she deals with her disability, she replies: "This is my reality. This is my normal." View pictures: Rosemarie Siggins family

1/3 patients on transplant list not eligible
1/3 of patients on transplant list not eligible. The list of patients waiting for organ transplants---widely used to promote organ donations---includes thousands who are ineligible for the operations, according to statistics kept by the national network that manages the allocation of organs. More than a third of the nearly 98,000 patients on the list at any one time are classified as "inactive," meaning they could not be given an organ if one became available because they are too sick, or not sick enough, or for some other, often unexplained, reason. Although the need for organs far outpaces the supply, critics say the large number of inactive patients on the list may signal that potential recipients are languishing in limbo too long and that including them could mislead potential donors, recipients and policy-makers about the magnitude of the need…

You can go home again, even at 52...
You Can Go Home Again, Even At 52.. Bad Economy Forces Some 'Children' To Move In With Parents After being laid off from her job as an events planner at an upscale resort, Jo Ann Bauer struggled financially. She worked at several lower-paying jobs, relocated to a new city and even declared bankruptcy. Then, in December, she finally accepted her parents' invitation to move into their home — at age 52. “I'm back living in the bedroom that I grew up in,” she said. Taking shelter with parents isn't uncommon for young people in their 20s, especially when the job market is poor. But now the slumping economy and the credit crunch are forcing some children to do so later in life — even in middle age...

Here's a cute, pageview-intensive blog she made for that book, and here's the rest of her stuff

McCain meets Sarkozy
McCain meets Sarkozy, comments on China. Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain said Friday that China is harming its world image with its crackdown in Tibet and expressed hope Beijing would seek a peaceful solution to the crisis. McCain did not discuss the issue during a 45-minute meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, but told reporters later the subject was "one of the first things I would talk about if I were president of the United States today." China's crackdown "is not correct," McCain said in the courtyard of the French presidential Elysee Palace. "The people there are being subjected to mistreatment that is not acceptable with the conduct of a world power, which China is," McCain said in response to a question by a Chinese television journalist. "There must be respect for human rights, and I would hope that the Chinese are actively seeking a peaceful resolution to this situation that exists which harms not only the human rights of the people there but also the image of China in the world." The White House has urged Beijing to respect Tibetan culture and multi-ethnicity in its society. McCain was in Paris for a matter of hours at the end of a weeklong tour of the Middle East and Europe. He was traveling as part of a U.S. congressional delegation—including Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.—that visited Iraq, Jordan, Israel and London…

We're 40 years from global catasstrophe...
We're all doomed! 40 years from global catastrophe - and there's NOTHING we can do about it, says climate change expert. By 2040, the world population of more than six billion will have been culled by floods, drought and famine. The people of Southern Europe, as well as South-East Asia, will be fighting their way into countries such as Canada, Australia and Britain. We will, he says, have to set up encampments in this country, like those established for the hundreds of thousands of refugees displaced by the conflict in East Africa. Lovelock believes the subsequent ethnic tensions could lead to civil war. Crackpot or visionary, the fact is that more and more people are paying attention to Lovelock, and that he, himself, supports the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - the influential group who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former American vice president Al Gore for their campaigns on global warming. Lovelock also says that Margaret Thatcher and the Queen are "sympathetic" to his views…

Tattoos could be good for your health - tattooed vaccines -
We may all be getting tattoos in the future - tattooed vaccinations against disease, that is. German researchers have shown that tattooing is a more effective way of delivering DNA vaccines than intramuscular injection. Dr. Martin Mueller and his team at the Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (German Cancer Research Centre) in Heidelberg published their findings in the online open access journal, Genetic Vaccines and Therapy. Using a coat protein from the human papillomavirus (HPV, the cause of cervical cancer) as a model DNA vaccine antigen, they compared delivery by tattooing the skin of mice with standard intramuscular injection with and without the molecular adjuvants that are often given to boost immune response. The tattoo method gave a stronger humoral (antibody) response and cellular response than intramuscular injection, even when adjuvants were included in the latter.

Candidates and Iraq
Candidates assess Iraq on fifth anniversary. The Democratic presidential candidates offered a sharply different take on the Iraq war from that of GOP Sen. John McCain as each candidate observed the war's fifth anniversary Wednesday. In sharp contrast to the Democrats, McCain argued in a statement that the situation in Iraq had dramatically improved and that U.S. troops must remain there. Watch President Bush defend the invasion of Iraq » "America and our allies stand on the precipice of winning a major victory against radical Islamic extremism. ... Important political gains have also been made, but far more must be done in coming months to cement the gains made in huge cost in American blood and treasure," McCain said…
