Bronze age burial with beer mug
Bronze Age burial 'with beer mug' A 4,000-year-old Bronze Age skeleton has been unearthed by archaeologists working on a site in east Kent. Canterbury Archaeological Trust said the curled-up skeleton was an example of a "Beaker" burial because of the pottery vessel placed at its feet. Education officer Marion Green said the "beautifully decorated" pot could have been "a type of beer mug". She said tests on beakers from other sites suggested Bronze Age man was brewing a type of beer from grain. The body was in a "crouched" position typical of the period, with knees drawn up to the chest, she added. Possibly ceremonial objects were found buried with the individual, who could have been a high-status male, she said…

Meghan, daughter of John McCain
Raising McCain…Meghan McCain is a 23-year-old, socially liberal John Kerry voter who loves Superbad, Dita von Teese, Bud Light (see right hand), and campaign blogging. Trouble is, this self-described “Daddy’s girl” will do—and say—almost anything to help her 71-year-old father win the White House… Meghan has been given a prominent place in her father’s presidential campaign, most notably with her blog, McCainBlogette.com. Loosely inspired, she says—loosely!—by Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ’72, McCain Blogette is a sometimes irreverent, sometimes overly rah-rah account of life on the Straight Talk Express (“Lindsey Graham is hilarious!”), with tons of photographs and even iPod playlists (favorites have included Wolfmother and Hot Hot Heat). Charming and self-deprecating, McCain Blogette often makes Meghan’s 71-year-old father seem less old, which is surely one of the reasons it exists, even if Meghan occasionally does something like refer to Barack Obama as “sexy,” which she did right before the New Hampshire primary…

Poll about Obama
Poll: Wright likely to hurt Obama. More than half of Democrats and nearly two-thirds of Republicans would be less likely to support Sen. Barack Obama for president after viewing video clips of his longtime friend and pastor espousing a radical "black power" worldview, a poll showed yesterday. After viewing sermons in which the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. called the U.S. government racist and directed racially charged attacks at Sen Hillary Rodham Clinton, 52 percent of self-described Democrats said they would be less likely to support Mr. Obama, according to the survey by HCD Research. The nationwide poll of 798 voters showed 71 percent of Republicans and 54 percent of independents also would be less likely to support Mr. Obama after viewing the clips…

Gecko acrobatics
Tail 'key' for gecko acrobatics. A gecko's tail is as crucial to the animal's acrobatic ability as its "sticky" feet, scientists report. High-speed video reveals that the creature uses its tail as a "fifth leg" to prevent it from slipping as it climbs wet surfaces. And the footage shows that if it does fall, a flick of the tail is all it takes for the gecko to land feet-down…

Row over BBC Jesus drama
Row over BBC drama which shows Jesus crucified in a foetal position. The BBC is facing accusations of rewriting the Easter story by claiming Christ was nailed to the cross in a foetal position. The corporation is accused of "misleading" the public by ditching the traditional image of Jesus with arms outstretched, legs straight and hands nailed. Makers of lavish new drama The Passion, which started last night, say they are challenging this image, because new historical evidence shows he probably did not die this way. They instead maintain he likely died with his arms above his head, nails through his arms and his knees bent, when killed by the Romans…

Hit and run - murder and insurance scam - grannies
D.A.: Accused hit-run grannies squabbled in custody. Two elderly women accused of killing two transient men with a car so they could collect nearly $3 million in insurance money were videotaped talking about the scheme while in FBI custody, the prosecutor said in opening statements Tuesday. "It's your fault," Olga Rutterschmidt, 75, told co-defendant Helen Golay, 77, in the tape played for the jury. "You can't have that many insurers. ... You were greedy. That's the problem." Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Truc Do said the women befriended the two men and took out insurance policies on their lives, then drugged them and ran them over to make it look as if the two homeless men had been killed in hit-and-run accidents. Rutterschmidt and Golay each have pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder for financial gain in the deaths of 73-year-old Paul Vados in 1999 and 51-year-old Kenneth McDavid in 2005…

High road for Hillary on Rezko Wright
While her campaign held a conference call to push Barack Obama to release even more information on his relationship with indicted businessman Tony Rezko, Hillary Clinton took the high road in a media avail with reporters aboard her press plane — deferring any and all Rezko-related questions to the Obama campaign. She did the same with queries on Obama’s controversial pastor Jeremiah Wright — who has suggested the US played a role in 911 and the spread of HIV. Part of the reluctance to talk about supporters may stem from a conversation she had with Obama on the Senate floor on Thursday at the height of the Geraldine Ferraro madness, in which the two senators discussed how to keep the focus of the race on the issues. “We both have had instances during the course of the year with staff members, supporters saying things that we’ve had to reject and repudiate,” she said. “We want to make sure we try to keep this campaign focused on what voters are interested in.” A big, good interview article and video…
