McCain in Iraq
McCain makes unexpected visit to Iraq. BAGHDAD - Sen. John McCain, the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for president who has linked his political future to U.S. success in Iraq, was in Baghdad on Sunday for meetings with Iraqi and U.S. diplomatic and military officials, a U.S. government official said. "Senator McCain is in Iraq and will be meeting with Iraqi and U.S. officials," said Mirembe Nantongo, spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
This is his eighth visit to Iraq. He's accompanied by Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. Before leaving McCain said his trip to the Middle East and Europe was a fact-finding venture, not a campaign photo opportunity. The senator last met with Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki last November during the Thanksgiving holiday. McCain was to meet Sunday with Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh. Later in the day, he and Gen. David Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq, were planning to talk. It was also thought McCain would meet with al-Maliki. "We were informed that John McCain landed in Iraq Sunday morning. A meeting will take place with the Iraqi government," said Ali al-Moussawi, an official in the Iraqi prime minister's office. There were no details immediately available about McCain's meetings and his schedule for the day apparently remained in flux, a U.S. official said on condition of anonymity as the official was not authorized to release the information. McCain's weeklong trip also includes stops in Israel, Jordan, Britain and France…

Grandma won’t give her purse up because it's hers!
83-year-old grandma foils purse snatcher. 'I was fighting for what was mine,' says the grandmother with an iron grip. An 83-year-old great-grandmother thwarted a would-be purse snatcher with a gas nozzle and an iron grip. Bernie Garcia said a young man approached her at a gas station as she was buying fuel for her van and asked for money. When she told him she had spent all her spare change on gas, he tried to grab her purse. "But I had it wrapped around my wrist twice," Garcia said, and he was unable to pull it away. She said she felt fine after the attack, and police say she declined medical attention at the scene. But when she got home, she said, she felt faint and went to bed and woke up Thursday very sore. Her son, a former firefighter, checked her out and found no broken bones. "My son said, 'Why didn't you just give (the purse) up?'" Garcia said. "'Hell no,' I told him. That was my purse. I was fighting for what was mine."

A delegate loophole for Clinton?
Citing wiggle room in an obscure, 26-year-old Democratic Party rule, Hillary Clinton's campaign is leaving the door open to the idea of attempting to persuade Barack Obama's pledged delegates to switch their votes at the last minute and back the New York senator—despite fears among some party officials that it could throw this summer's Denver convention into chaos…

Why McCain might win
Why McCain Might Win…He can sit back while the Dems tear each other to shreds. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama show few signs that they're aware of it, but the general election campaign has already begun. And appropriately for the eve of St. Patrick's Day, the pair have begun to destroy each other like the two crazy Irish cats of Kilkenny. The upshot is that both of them are already losing the general to John McCain. By the time the Democratic convention rolls around in August and the nomination is finally awarded, the battle may already be over. Obama's advisers point out, rightfully, that the Clinton campaign started this downward drift toward mutually assured destruction, Democratic-style, with its now infamous "red phone" ad before the critical Ohio and Texas primaries. Subtly but with devastating impact, the TV commercial raised questions about Obama's preparedness to be commander in chief. The Obama campaign responded by effectively branding Hillary Clinton a liar about her own record. "As far as the record shows, Sen. Clinton never answered the phone either to make a decision on any pressing national security issue—not at 3 a.m. or at any other time of day," top Obama adviser Greg Craig—a former close friend of Hillary's—wrote this week in a widely circulated memo

Victims' fund assists felons…City's cycle of crime among young men: perpetrators one day, victims the next. Deandra M. Gaskins once pointed a handgun at the face of a woman leaving a corner store and demanded money, saying, "Kick it out." The armed robber is also a convicted car thief and drug dealer who has been arrested at least eight times on Baltimore's streets. In May 2005, less than two weeks after he was charged with selling heroin out of a gas station, Gaskins was wounded in a drive-by shooting in South Baltimore. When thousands of dollars in hospital bills came in, he turned to the state for help. And he got it. The Maryland Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund, created 40 years ago to assist victims of crime, paid more than $42,000…

Sand dollar clones
Baby sand dollars clone themselves when they sense danger…The odds of growing up aren't good for baby sand dollars. Smaller than the head of a pin, the larvae drift in the ocean — easy prey for anything with a mouth. But a University of Washington graduate student has discovered the tiny animal has a surprising survival strategy: Faced with the threat of being gobbled up, it makes like Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies and clones itself.
The resulting "mini-me" may escape hungry fish because it is even teenier than the original — and harder to see. "If you are eaten, but the smaller version of you survives, you're still a winner from an evolutionary standpoint," said Dawn Vaughn…

Iran elections
Hardliners surge ahead in Iranian vote. Hardliners allied with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took the lead in Iran's parliamentary elections, according to partial results early Saturday, but reformists showed strength in some cities where the clerical leadership allowed them to compete. Reformist leaders pushed for Iranians to vote Friday, hoping to prevent a sweep by Ahmadinejad allies after the country's clerics threw many liberal candidates out of the race. Results early Saturday from 32 contests -- a fraction of the 290 seats at stake -- showed the hard-liners winning 19 seats, reformists eight and moderate conservatives five, according to results compiled from local officials speaking to The Associated Press and reports from the official IRNA and semi-official Fars news agencies. Nearly half the seats won by hard-liners so far were in districts where no reformist candidates were running -- a sign of the impact after reformist ranks were dramatically cut by the cleric-led Guardian Council. The returns, mostly from smaller towns, were insufficient to determine any solid trend. Watch Iranians vote for new parliament »… and read this declaration statement of the EU Parliament: CFSP Presidency Statements March 0315MZZ_Iran The Presidency closely followed the events in the run-up to the recent parliamentary elections in Iran. It expresses its deep concern that election procedures in the Islamic Republic of Iran have fallen below the international standards and that the electoral process did not allow for truly competitive elections. In this regard it expresses its deep regret and disappointment that over a third of prospective candidates were prevented from standing in this year’s parliamentary elections. These exclusions prevented the Iranian people from being able to choose freely amongst the full range of political views in their country and represent a clear violation of the international norms. As a result, the election was neither fair nor free…

Caught on camera - arsonist firebombs nightspot -
Caught on video: Man firebombs city nightspot. LAWRENCE — A would-be arsonist nearly got caught in the flames of his own making when he firebombed a Common Street nightspot early this morning. Dramatic video surveillance footage shows the man dashing away from the front of El Centro, at 60 Common St., just a step ahead of an explosion of flames that poured out of a window in a door he had just smashed. The video shows the man pulling up outside the club about 3 a.m. and making three trips between his car and the front of the club. On each trip, he carried a large jug police said were filled with gasoline and equipped with wicks. Detective Sgt. Gene Hatem said the man apparently used a hammer to smash out the window in the door, tossed in two of the jugs of gasoline, poured some gasoline inside the door, then lit a wick on the third jug and threw it inside. The first two jugs didn't go off, but the third one did, Hatem said. The flames didn't get too far. The third jug landed directly under a sprinkler head, which promptly went to work controlling the flames. The other two jugs also landed under a sprinkler head, Hatem said. Special agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were sent to the scene yesterday morning to assist the Lawrence Fire Investigation Unit with the probe…
