International army chiefs attend secret meeting in Sydney
International army chiefs attend secret Sydney meeting. A most extraordinary gathering occurred in Sydney last week, which up until now has been kept secret. The top military brass included military chiefs from the US, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. The presence of 19 chiefs of army in Sydney at the same time and at the same venue last week was considered too risky to publicise. Instead, the meeting was kept secret. The military leaders discussed the types of new missions modern armies have to carry out, and ways to improve their performance. The Chief of the Australian Army, Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, says the complexity of modern security environments make for some real issues. "We're working in areas that we perhaps haven't planned to work in, for example the work that we've all been doing to assist the disaster relief, some of the humanitarian operations, the peacekeeping operations, and those sorts of things as well as what we're pretty well prepared to do as the conventional operations," he said…

US considering terrorist label for Iran's revolutionary guards
US Considering Terrorist Label for Iran's Revolutionary Guards… If the move goes forward, it would be the first time the United States has added an armed forces unit of any sovereign government to its list of terrorist groups. The designation allows the U.S. to freeze any assets the group, its members, or subsidiaries may have in the U.S. Speaking on condition of anonymity, senior administration officials say a final decision has not yet been made, and that there still is an internal debate whether to target the entire Iranian corps or only its al-Quds force wing. In recent weeks, U.S. officials have complained of growing involvement of the al-Quds force in providing support for insurgents...

NY-times on that terrorist Iran guards issue...
U.S. Weighing Terrorist Label for Iran Guards… On Tuesday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad again dismissed American complaints that Iran is providing weapons to the Taliban. Speaking in Kabul, Afghanistan, after talks with President Hamid Karzai, he said Iran was “fully supporting” its new government. Mr. Karzai played down the dispute over the weapons shipments, as he did during a visit to the White House this month. He said that Afghanistan and Iran were “brothers” and that both the United States and Iran were helping reconstruct his country. In June, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said the volume of weapons reaching the Taliban from Iran made it “difficult to believe” that the shipments were “taking place without the knowledge of the Iranian government.” In a television interview the same day, Assistant Secretary of State R. Nicholas Burns said there was “irrefutable evidence” that the weapons were coming from the Revolutionary Guard. There are currently 42 organizations on the State Department’s list of foreign terrorist organizations, including Al Qaeda, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and the Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Two dozens of home grown terrorists in the US...
Exclusive: U.S. Studying Two Dozen 'Clusters' of Possible Homegrown Terrorists. U.S. law enforcement officials say they have identified more than two dozen "clusters" of young Muslim men in the northeast United States who are on a path that could lead to homegrown terror, ABC News has learned. "Any one of those clusters may be capable of carrying out a terrorist action that will result in fatalities," Rand Corporation terrorism expert Brian Jenkins tells ABC News. The report identifies mosques, bookstores, cafes, prisons and flop houses as what it calls "radicalization incubators" that provide "extremist fodder or fuel for radicalization." The report, in its conclusions, asserts that the most significant threat to the homeland is not al Qaeda but the spread of the ideology promulgated by violent extremist Muslims, such as those belonging to al Qaeda, into the United States where it helps to radicalize residents. "We assess that this internal Muslim terrorist threat is not likely to be as severe as it is in Europe, however," is the paragraph's close…
