Computers crack famous board game… It could be a case of game over for draughts - scientists say the ancient board game has finally been solved. A Canadian team has created a computer program that can win or draw any game, no matter who the opponent is. It took an average of 50 computers nearly two decades to sift through the 500 billion billion possible draughts positions to come up with the solution. Writing in the journal Science, the team said it was the most challenging game solved to date. Jonathan Schaeffer, lead author on the paper and chair of the department of computer science at the University of Alberta, Canada, told the BBC News website: "This was a huge computational problem to solve - more than a million times bigger than anything that had ever been solved before." Professor Schaeffer, who admits he is "awful" at draughts (also known as checkers), began his attempts to solve the board game in 1989…

Terror Arrests after Bristol Drugs Raid… A drug swoop in Bristol has become a terror investigation after police found containers labelled as hydrogen peroxide during a search of a house. The property was combed following the arrest of a man in the Castle Park area over drugs-related offences. Forensic experts are to undertake a full analysis of the substance in the containers to investigate any potential link to planned terrorist activity. Steve Mortimore, Assistant Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset police, said: "If it is hydrogen peroxide that would obviously cause extreme concern. "But we do have two men in custody, we have got the chemical taken away from the premises, and we are reassuring the community and taking it seriously at this time of heightened vigilance." Hydrogen peroxide was an ingredient used by terrorists to prepare the bombs used in the failed July 21, 2005 attack on London's transport system…
