An invitation from Ahmadinejad or Ali Khamenei? Previous diplomacy? Concessions? An OK from the head of the PPD that it's safe to travel? In July of 2007, Barack Obama was asked by a video questioner: "Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea?....." "I would," he answered. Now -- in Obama's answer, he broadens the predicate, saying at one point that "we need to talk to Iran and Syria," which is not the same thing, necessarily, as talking to Ali Khamenei or to Ahmadinejad or to Assad, but contextually, given the question was about "leaders" and given that the questioner mentioned the phrase "without preconditions," it certainly sounds as if Obama was promising to meet, within the first year of his administration, without preconditions, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, North Korea, etc…

Al-Jazeera's coverage of the primary focused on the facts and avoided editorializing, and its interpretation of the meaning of last Tuesday's events was squarely within the mainstream of U.S. political reporting. The only exceptional things about it were the language spoken by the on-air talent and the fact that a satellite channel based halfway around the world in a tiny Gulf emirate had the means and the interest to report from Indiana and Washington on the complexities of the U.S. primary system to Arabic-speaking viewers. Many Americans incorrectly think of Al-Jazeera's Arabic-language network as al-Qaida Central because it occasionally broadcasts excerpts from videotapes of the terror organization's leaders. Nowadays, however, viewers are far more likely to see images of the American presidential candidates on the channel's screens. As the United States, always an interested party, has become a dominant on-the-ground player in the Middle East, residents of the region increasingly feel that their own fate depends on the outcome of this election. I was in Qatar earlier this month and stopped by the office of Ahmed Sheikh, editor in chief of Al-Jazeera's Arabic service, to ask him about his network's coverage of the campaign. Al-Jazeera's Arabic service studios in the rapidly growing metropolis of Doha have been expanded but are still relatively modest. The facilities at the new English-language Al-Jazeera International across the street are far more state-of-the-art. The correspondent who welcomed me said that when Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak visited, he was taken aback by how small the studio was, remarking, "So this is the matchbox that has caused all that trouble!" Safely delivered to Sheikh's office, I was plied with strong Arab tea. Soon our conversation turned to the U.S. presidential campaign. Why, I asked, give such distant events air time? "Because the United States is occupying Iraq and it is an ally of Israel and a power broker in the region," Sheikh replied. "The United States is the only superpower on the planet. Events in Iraq and Palestine affect this area." …

I for one have renewed questions about the 1993 suicide of Deputy White House Counsel Vince Foster, Hillary's former law partner and longtime friend, whose files were purged by Hillary's staff before they could be examined for evidence. One must always be skeptical about Web rumors, but my interest was piqued last year by claims that Foster was shattered by the role he had played three months earlier in the outrageous order for federal agents to attack David Koresh's ranch at Waco, Texas, producing a conflagration that led to 76 deaths, including 21 children. Why has the Waco fiasco been forgotten? It triggered the worst case of domestic terrorism in U.S. history, the 1995 revenge bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City….

McCain’s character will win Hispanic support
For many conservatives, John McCain is not their favorite Republican. They think he's built a career at their expense, painting them as fools and bigots. They resent his holier-than-thou attitude. And they're not inclined to trust anyone who has been so fawned over by the national media. Curiously, a lot of liberal Democrats feel the same way about McCain. He isn't their favorite Republican either -- but it's because they know he'll be tough to beat in November. They would have preferred to run against someone more extreme and easier to demonize. That's not John McCain. I first met McCain 10 years ago when I was a working at The Arizona Republic. What I remember is that, in a political climate where so many elected officials -- Republican and Democrat alike -- were wearing themselves out pandering to racists who demanded action on illegal immigration, McCain was one of the few who didn't play that game. In 1998, while Texas Gov. George W. Bush made headlines for earning an impressive 49 percent of the Hispanic vote in his re-election, McCain walked off with an unheard-of 65 percent in his Senate re-election bid. Six years later, he did even better, earning around 70 percent of the Hispanic vote…Most political observers don't expect McCain to match those numbers in a national election, but half of that -- 35 percent -- is a definite possibility. With that kind of support among Hispanics, McCain could win the White House. And so Democrats are doing everything they can to distort McCain's record. Some are actually accusing McCain of not doing enough for immigration reform. In fact, they might even try to compare McCain to nativists such as Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., who competed with the Arizona senator for the GOP nomination. Good luck. The two men seem to detest one another. They even tangled last summer when McCain dismissed Tancredo's views on what makes someone an American as "beyond my realm of thinking."

Despite the fact that all-but-coronated Republican nominee John McCain was running essentially without opposition Tuesday, 27 percent of Republican primary participants in North Carolina cast their votes for a candidate other than McCain. In Indiana, 23 percent of Republican primary voters rejected the senator from Arizona. How do you test a new kind of rocket engine? To start with, bolt it to a trailer in the middle of the Mojave Desert. In this case, NASA is firing up the 5M15, which runs on compressed liquid methane. MK Mohammed Barakeh (Hadash) was among 10 left-wing activists and a press photographer who were lightly injured yesterday when security forces dispersed a demonstration against the separation fence close to the West Bank village on Bil'in. Bil'in, which is located north of the Jerusalem-Modi'in highway, has been the site of daily demonstrations against the fence by Palestinians and Israeli leftists. Hundreds of dunams of village land, located in the West Bank, were confiscated for use in construction of the fence. Police officers and Israel Defense Forces troops at the site clashed with the hundreds of protesters who attended the anti-fence rally. The security forces fired rubber bullets and sprayed tear gas to disperse the crowd. During the clashes, which also included fist-fights, an Associated Press photographer was lightly hurt, apparently by a stun grenade thrown by police officers. According to the demonstrators, at one point a stun grenade also went off near Barakeh's leg. He was treated by an ambulance crew at the site…

Tracy Ingle: Another Drug War Outrage…Here's a quick rundown: • On January 7, 2008 a paramilitary police unit in North Little Rock, Arkansas conducted a drug raid on Tracy Ingle's home. Ingle says he had fallen asleep for several hours, and was asleep when the raid happened. He awoke when the police took a battering ram to his door. Another team of officers approached form the outside of the house, and shattered the window to his bedroom. • When he awoke, Ingle says he thought his home was being invaded by armed robbers. He reached for a broken gun, a pretty clear indication that he had no intention of killing anyone, but rather was trying to scare away the intruders. When he grabbed the gun, an officer inside the house fired his weapon. The bullet hit Ingle just above the knee, shattered his thigh bone, and nearly severed his lower leg. When the outside officers heard the shot, they opened up on Ingle, hitting him four more times. According to Ingle's sister, one bullet still rests just above Ingle's heart, and can't be removed. Ingle was taken to the hospital, and spent a week-and-a-half in intensive care. He was then removed from intensive care—still in his hospital pajamas—and taken to the North Little Rock police department, where he was questioned for five hours. He was not told he was suspected of a crime, and his family wasn't allowed to speak with him. After the interrogation, he was arrested and transferred to the county jail. Ingle spent the next four days in jail. He says he was never given his pain medication or his antibiotics. Though hospital nurses told him to change his bandages and clean his wounds every 4-6 hours, Ingle told the Arkansas Times that jail officials changed them only twice in four days. Ingle's wounds became infected during the time he was in jail. Police found no illegal drugs in Ingle's home. They did find a scale, which Ingle's sister tells me was an extra she was given when she worked at a medical testing facility. She used it in her jewelry-making hobby. They also found a bunch of small plastic bags. Again, Ingle's sister says these were part of her business. "I was leaving the country for a while, and I stored a lot of my stuff at his house," she told me. "The scale and bags were mine, and are both common things to have for anyone who makes jewelry." Police also found the broken gun and a broken police scanner…Harry's response: This is sadly enough if (?) the guy is really innocent…the dark-side of a war against drugs…with not always the best and professional detectives, bad research and a lot of “witness” stories as a start for such SWAT actions…The war on drugs is right and must go on, but should be based on facts, the most important facts are traffic of dope, and money…not the jealous gossip and not the gossip manipulations coming from the dope dealing gansterbosses in the scene…

Democrats believe that as many as nine Republican-held Senate seats are vulnerable in 2008. The AFL-CIO, Change to Win, and allied unions plan to spend $360 million on the 2008 election. That’s around $200 million more than the unions spent in the Kerry-Bush race. As Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton slug it out for the nomination, the AFL-CIO is running a $53 million campaign attacking John McCain—portraying him as a right-wing ideologue who co-sponsored the Secret Ballot Protection Act, the GOP’s attempt at making kryptonite against card check. All that union money comes with a promise: What’s good for unions will be good for the Democrats. Greg Tarpinian, a Change to Win organizer who spoke at the Take Back America panel, pointed out that union membership was one of the strongest determinants for a voter choosing a Democratic ballot. “If union membership was 10 percent in Ohio in 2004,” he argued, “John Kerry would be president.” If card check passes, Tarpinian has only one worry: the ability of the National Labor Relations Board to “keep up with the demand” for brand new unions. Those new brothers and sisters of the labor movement will start paying dues; said dues will find their way to new Democratic campaigns like salmon finding their way upstream…

A SICK actor collapsed on stage - at the same time as his character was meant to have a heart attack and die. Steve Dineen was taken to hospital after he keeled over during the dramatic finale of Mike Leigh's famous comedy Abigail's Party. In the play, lead character Laurence dies of a heart attack in the final minutes and Dineen was moments away from acting out the death. So when he fell suddenly to the floor, the audience at Musselburgh's Brunton Theatre thought it was just part of his impressive performance. But co-star Alice Selwyn noticed Dineen's struggle was genuine and came out of character to ask for a doctor. The actor was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and kept in overnight for tests. Scientists in New Zealand dissecting a rarely seen colossal squid say they have discovered the largest known eye. Over the last few days the creature has been examined as it emerges from the deep freeze in which it has been kept since it was accidentally caught by fishermen off the coast of Antarctica last February. While defrosting the 495kg (78lb) animal took longer than expected, scientists working at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa found that its two eyes measured 27cm (11in) across, with lenses 10 to 12 centimetres in diameter — the size of an orange. "This is the only intact eye (of a colossal squid) that's ever been found. It's spectacular," said Auckland University of Technology squid specialist Kat Bolstad, one of a team of international scientists brought in to examine the creature. "It's the largest known eye in the animal kingdom," Bolstad said. If the squid were alive, said Professor Eric Warrant of the University of Lund in Sweden, the eyes would probably measure about 40 centimetres across, "about the size of a beach ball". The scientists said these would help the squid to locate prey in the dark of its habitat 1,000 metres (621ft) deep in the Antarctic waters. The squid can descend to 2,000m (6,500ft) and are known to be aggressive hunters. Its two long tentacles carry up to 25 rotating hooks each, while each of its eight arms contain up to 19 fixed hooks used to capture prey and bring it to the squid's beaked mouth. The squid is the biggest known specimen of the rare and mysterious deep-water species Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, or colossal squid. When caught, it measured 26 feet long and weighed about 1,000 pounds, but scientists believe the species may grow as long as 46 feet.Developments on the dissection can be followed on Te Papa's website including the discovery of the squid's ovaries which ends debate about its sex. But the scientists believe that larger squid still lurk in the Southern Ocean…

Mother Duck Needs Some Help
Commuters in Salt Lake City stopped their vehicles on Highland Drive -- not for traffic, but for a mother duck who lost her babies in a storm drain. A commuter saw the mother duck hysterically walking across the street, and decided to stop and help. Another passerby soon joined and the two spotted several baby ducks stuck in a nearby storm drain -- located near 5800 South Highland Drive. Father And Daughter Reveal They Had Baby Together. A FATHER and daughter who have revealed they are couple and have a child together had another baby who died a few days after birth from a congenital heart disease, court documents show. South Australian couple John and Jenny Deaves with their daughter, Celeste. Picture: Channel 9 John Earnest Deaves and his daughter Jennifer Anne Deaves are at the centre of an incest scandal in South Australia over their seven-year relationship. The pair revealed their relationship on Channel 9's 60 Minutes program last night, saying they were just asking for some respect and understanding. In March this year, they were placed on three-year good behaviour bonds after pleading guilty to two counts of incest. District Court sentencing judge Steven Millsteed said the first count of incest was based on an act of sexual intercourse which resulted in the birth of the couple's first child. The second count of incest related to an act of sexual intercourse which resulted in the birth of their second child in May last year. "The first child was born in 2001 but died a few days after birth due to a congenital heart disease," Judge Millsteed said. The couple had started a relationship together after being reunited in 2000, almost 30 years after Mr Deaves separated from Jenny's mother. Because of problems with her own marriage, Ms Deaves had gone to live with her father at Yongala, in South Australia. Their physical relationship developed later that year and both ended their marriages and began living together. But that has been challenged by Mr Deaves' ex-wife who has rubbished claims he had not seen his daughter for 30 years. Mr Deaves' ex-wife Dorothy, 69, who he married long after splitting with Jenny's mother, told ninemsn that when she married John Deaves in 1984, the then 15-year-old Jenny stayed with them for a week. "It was hard to face for a long time," Mrs Deaves said. "It's one of those things everyone's so upset about." Jenny stayed with them four times before their marriage broke down in 2000 after the father and daughter took a trip to Dubbo together, she said. "Each of you say that the other has provided care and affection that was missing in your marriage," Judge Millsteed said earlier. "You also say that although you are father and daughter, that you were virtually strangers when your relationship commenced and that the relationship was based on mutual love and respect." The couple had their first child while living in Rockhampton, Queensland, before moving to Port Pirie, in South Australia. After the birth of their second child they moved to Bordertown, near the Victorian border where the Department of Families and Communities became aware of their relationship and turned the matter over to police. Judge Millsteed said that when contacted by police the Deaves made full admissions. He said both Jenny and John Deaves told him that they accepted their sexual relationship must end but hoped they would be able to continue to support one another and the children. But he said while the case was not typical he had to impose a sentence that impressed upon them that any resumption of their incestuous relationship was unacceptable. "The offence of incest exists not merely to protect children from sexual abuse," Judge Millsteed said. "In my view, other relevant factors include the need to prevent the high risk of congenital defects in children born of incestuous relationships and to prevent children suffering psychological harm and social stigmatisation." The usual theory is that Kennedy gained experience and a healthy scepticism for official advice…. Now a new book offers an alternative explanation. In his riveting volume In Sickness and In Power, former Foreign Secretary and medic David Owen reviews the health and medication of leaders over the last century. The chapter on Kennedy is jaw-dropping.
Owen starts by convincingly asserting that Kennedy was much sicker than is commonly appreciated and certainly much sicker than was appreciated at the time. His Addison's disease was very debilitating and needed constant attention. And there were other health troubles. During the Bay of Pigs fiasco Owen writes that Kennedy had: Constant and acute diarrhoea and a recurrence of his urinary tract infection. Central to Owen's account is the idea that the administration of drugs to Kennedy for these various ailments was out of control. In particular, without the knowledge of his other doctors and at the same time as they were giving him other drugs, he was being tended to by Max Jacobson, a doctor known as "Dr Feelgood" because of his reputation as a provider of amphetamines and pep pills. In time Jacobson's drug treatment became almost a recreational drug for Kennedy. Jacobson was later struck off…

Compare this with the downer Democrats whining that we've blown it, that it all might be in vain; indeed, we're worse off than before we lost more than 4,000 lives, spent trillions of dollars, and left 35,000 soldiers maimed and brain-damaged for life. Just suck it up. McCain's optimism is seductive no matter the facts because Americans aren't good losers. It's not that we're sore losers. We're just not losers generally and have no practice at it. The reigning national philosophy is we can do anything if we just stick with it. Anyone who can shield us from the reality of losing is tapping into an abiding need that exists in poker, illness and war: As long as you don't fold your cards, turn off the respirator, withdraw your troops, you're still in the game. You haven't lost. Take Your Pick. There were among the pro- and anti-war protesters in the halls those who chanted ``John McCain, you're insane,'' but he may be crazy like a fox. Who do you prefer to hear: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who said last April that the war was lost or McCain saying victory is just a surge away. Forget that the sending of more U.S. troops to Iraq hasn't accomplished its goal of creating a functioning government and an independent army. McCain has bragging rights to having said the surge would work and has statistics to show it has. That buys him time for the other stuff. McCain is winning the propaganda battle over the war. Obama risks making bad name for himself. The best indicator of Republican John McCain's surprisingly strong presidential prospects in what should be a slam-dunk Democratic year is not his solid general-election poll numbers but rather the increasingly shrill attacks from Democrats. The latest was a grotesque slam from Barack Obama supporter Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV of West Virginia. In a newspaper interview in his home state, Rockefeller let loose this stinker: "McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they get to the ground? He doesn't know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues." Never mind that laser-guided missiles hadn't been invented during the Vietnam war. Bombing is a part of warfare, and McCain was serving his country as have legions of other bomber airmen. Rockefeller smeared them all. One further point: McCain was a prisoner of war in Hanoi when U.S. planes bombed the city, on the orders of McCain's admiral father.
So wrong was this that Rockefeller not only quickly apologized, but his office also later made a point of saying that McCain had accepted his apology. For his part, Obama said nothing, but his campaign issued a statement that he "does not agree" with Rockefeller's remarks. The recent attacks could be written as standard political hardball in a hotly contested race. But, as McCain points out, Obama has promised a campaign of hope, free of the cynicism and divisive ugly politics of the past. True, good intentions tend to go by the wayside when you're battling for the most powerful job in the world. And the line between legitimate electioneering and reckless politics can be fuzzy. Still, all this does leave Obama looking a bit more like just another politician…

Only in a later appearance on "The View" television show did he say that he would have left the church if Rev. Wright had not retired and not acknowledged his offensive language. As the nation tries to recall the meaning of Martin Luther King today, Mr. Obama's campaign has become a mirror reflecting where we are on race 40 years after the assassination. Mr. Obama's success has moved forward the story of American race relations; King would have been thrilled with his political triumphs. But when Barack Obama, arguably the best of this generation of black or white leaders, finds it easy to sit in Rev. Wright's pews and nod along with wacky and bitterly divisive racial rhetoric, it does call his judgment into question. And it reveals a continuing crisis in racial leadership. What would Jesus do? There is no question he would have left that church…you can’t compare Obama and King…

Drug addicts and alcoholics on benefits double in a decade. The number of drug abusers and alcoholics on incapacity benefits has more than doubled in ten years. Your View: Is Britain a nation of addicts? Figures show that more than 100,000 addicts are now claiming the benefit, which can be worth as much as £87.50 a week. The increase has come during a decade when the Government has relaxed laws on cannabis possession and introduced 24 hour drinking across the country. In 2007 a total of 51,410 people picked up the benefit because they were classified as suffering from alcoholism - a rise from the 1997 figure of 26,800. Those claiming the benefit because of drug abuse has risen from 21,900 in 1997 to 49,890 last year. The total number of people claiming Incapacity Benefit has risen over the past 10 years and now stands at 2.64 million. Some 1.8 million have started their claim since 1997 This means that drug abuses or alcoholics now account for almost one in every 25 claimants. In 1997 they accounted for less than one in 50. The Conservatives said that the benefits bill for these claimants is estimated to be running at over £8.5 million per week, and over £400 million a year. Chris Grayling, the shadow Work and Pensions secretary, said the current system does nothing to encourage addicts to receive treatment for their condition. Mr Grayling said: "These figures yet again show how Labour cannot get to grips with our welfare system. [Work and Pensions secretary] James Purnell likes to talk tough about Welfare Reform, but Labour's record over the last ten years shows they have failed." Matthew Elliott, chief executive for the campaigning group TaxPayers' Alliance, added: "It is absolutely shocking that so much taxpayers' money is being wasted on subsidising a lifestyle of alcoholism and drug. The benefits system is meant to be about helping people fallen on hard times to get back on their feet not keeping people on the breadline in lives of addiction for the long term." The incapacity benefit figures were revealed shortly after the Government admitted that nearly £3million is paid out every year to 12,000 people who no longer live in the UK…this is ridiculous ;(

What a magnificent idea, that if you say lots of words some of them are bound to be fantastic lies. So if you listen carefully to horse-racing commentators they say things like "And it's Teddy's Boy still leading three furlongs out as they come up to the fourth last fence with Nip and Tuck two lengths behind by the way I fought a tiger once, punched it clean out and they're all safely over." This wasn't just a politician's lie, it was the pointless lie of someone who sits on their own in pubs and leans across to grab you and lie compulsively. Her next round of soft-focus adverts will probably feature her soothingly saying, "My fellow Americans, I drank a pint of walrus milk once for a bet. I speak fluent Eskimo. I once ate all the gherkins in Belgium. My brother's got a yak in his loft. I fell asleep on a night bus once and woke up in Munich, and had to get a lift back on a camel. I used to live on an iceberg. I've got a waffle-maker that works underwater." And the daft thing with Hillary is her real life is ridiculous enough…

We had covered: publishing in this country and the US, religion, marriage, hookers, wine, trees, politics, bonobo monkeys, his sex and crack cocaine addiction, the environment, poetry, the Oz trial, prison, his mother, his late estranged father, childhood and death, to name but a few of the topics. Before even the first bottle had been drained - a lovely 1996 Chablis - it was clear that there was almost no detail that Dennis felt shy about sharing.
